Does coach Wilks still have a kid playing at Maryville? If so will he bring him with him to play ball or leave him at Maryville? Just curious.....

Scoot, I am hearing the Wilkes thing is just an internet rumor and that it won't be him since he did not apply.

Thanks for the info. I kind of thought it was only a rumor.

The announcement will be made at 2pm Tuesday 1/20/09. The new coach will have a meet and greet at the basketball game Tuesday night.....

Brint Russell, former Head Coach in Region 4-2A and assistant coach in North Carolina for perennial power Crest Chargers among others, will be a good fit at Heritage High School. Coach Russell has wonderful organizational and communication skills as well as football knowledge. His work ethic is 2nd to none and he'll give everything he has to the program. Heritage, you've hired a good person and things should begin to turn around for you. Congrats Coach Russell.

You seem to know a lot about this coach? I hope all you say is true and he can turn things around in a short time. I do have a couple of questions, how did he end up in Blount County and why did he leave the place he was last at?

I am excited about spring practice and the upcoming season just from what I have heard already. /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />

i have been told by one of the players in the meeting with him that

1. he plans on running the spread offense, but that will be based on his personal

2. he will run strict college style practices

3. he is young apparently around 30

oh one more thing

for 1 week during the summer

the kids will be required to attend camp and stay at the school over night

Congratulations to Heritage and to Coach Russell. I coached with Brint Russell at Jackson County High School in 2006 and feel he will be a nice fit at Heritage. I grew up in Blount County and played there through the 8th grade in the Midget League and Junior High ( Eagleton) so I know how competitive it is there. I am not certain but I think I would have missed attending Heritage, someone there might help me but I think Everett was still a High School in 75-76 and Heritage opened the next year. I'm not sure about that since i moved before my high school days. I do still consider having grown up in Blount County as contributing to my desire to compete. Maryville and Alcoa have always been excellent and Heritage and William Blount have had their moments.

I do have to add that while playing at Livingston Academy in 1974 we beat Alcoa 47-18 and got a little revenge for losing to them in Midget League in '71. But who remembers that far back, right? Just wondering whatever happened to Chiefy Wilson......

Heritage opened in the fall of 77 I think. I know WB opened in 79 and I believe Heritage was 2 years earlier. I caught up with Chiefy a few years back. He had moved back here from Phoenix I believe it was and officiating some middle school basketball. I believe I recall him telling me he had reffed at the juco level out in Arizona. Chiefy had some health concerns going on and unfortunately, I lost touch when my kids moved on from the middle school level to the high school level. Chiefy was one of, if not the, most intimidating little league pitchers I've ever witnessed. He was like the "Bob Gibson" of Alcoa Little League. /rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
    • I would not put too much stock into the UH over Eagleville. From what I understand they were pretty banged up in that tourney. Catcher was out, they were throwing pretty deep in their bullpen and a few key players were beat up in their infield. Sounds like they are pretty healthy heading into the district tournament. Look at their schedule, they played some really good teams.
