Some of these men sound like great fits but I wish to submit the following.

I would like the school board or Mr. Hoard set up a coach search committee, maybe some people will do it on a volunteer basis. Then raise the starting salary to attract some successful coaches rather than playing the old' boy games or looking for someone with local ties.

Heritage has been so bad for so many years the school and the kids deserve better. To a lesser extent WB is in the same boat in my humble opinion. The extra compensation would come from putting excitement and butts in those empty seats. Heritage has the best field atmosphere, parking and campus layout of all the schools in the county for a Friday night HS Football game. Other things that might help is a rule could be enacted to ban transfers to other Blount county schools (MHS & Alcoa) but allow transfers from other systems to the Blount County schools under a tuition system. Maybe allow the schools to drop a classification for the next 5 years or something like that. The program need to be fixed and changing coaches alone won??™t get it done.

Things outside the box should be done for a limited time to make the schools Football team competitive. The kids deserve better and a coach who knows how to get them there in badly needed. I have respect for every man who has been at HHS and WB, but frankly they could not get it done. So it must be other things right?

I don't really see how they could play down, unless they ship off a few hundred kids to Seymour and/or South Doyle since the enrollment rules are set.

WELL seeing as how there is a budget crunch and there would be huge legal discrepancies with banning things such as you are refering to ( you cannot control where people send thei children to school either way). I pay city and county taxes and if I want to send my kid to HHS , WBHS ,MHS or AHS is pretty much up to me and my wallet.

Agree and feel the same way. I was just thinking out loud and hope the best for those kids over there.

FBE,

With the utmost respect for your concern about Heritage and WB football programs, I can honestly say that most WB fans--familiar with the program--would tell you that we feel good about the WB football program and the coach we currently have in place.

We just experienced an unfortunate season and while those who really support the program don't want to whine or throw out excuses, most everyone would have to agree there were some less than favorable variables involved.

But overall, WB has had a very respectable and successful program the past few years. We've been winning football games and going to the playoffs on a fairly regular basis. We can't match what MHS and AHS have done, but we've certainly outperformed Heritage.

As far as "banning transfers." We would NEVER want that. Every parent has the freedom to do what they feel is best for their child. In my mind, ultimately, it should involve more than just athletics but it doesn't always work that way. Bottom line, we want to build a school community and sports teams with kids and families who WANT to be a part of William Blount High School and who want to work together to make it better. People always have choices ... we had one just a few years ago. It would have been very attractive to us to send our son and daughter to Maryville, but both my wife and myself were WB grads and have loved and supported "our school" down through the years and that's where we wanted our kids to go--PLUS that is where they wanted to be.

As far as the future, I suspect folks will see a better WB football team next season and I thnk the future is very bright. Only time will tell I suppose. Good luck to both Maryville and Alcoa this week. In my mind, this may be one of the best coaching jobs that GQ and Company have done in a while. Just my opinion.

I have heard a name from a few different people now, and could see the possibility of it happening.

John Reid!

He was in town this weekend, BTW.

I think John Reid would be a terrible hire for Heritage. They need somebody that is going to stick around and build the program. They do not need to hire somebody that is going to leave as soon as a better job opens.

I don't know if he made it to the game or not...saw him not too long before kickoff at an eatery in Alcoa with some BCS folks.....

EP was beaten last weekend by Grayson who, in turn ,knocked off Lowndes this weekend.

He's been there three years....that is about as long as he has stayed anywhere....

Anyway, I have heard he was interested from a few people now. Maybe he is just sending out feelers, then again maybe he is interested.

    • You are correct.   The teacher's pay scale is virtually the same in Knox County, now, as it is at Oak Ridge.   The coaching supplements are still higher at Oak Ridge, from what I was told, but not a huge difference.   Plus, Rusty is going from a position coach to an OC position, which is what he was at South Doyle and where his comfort zone is.  And from a special education teaching slot to a PE teaching slot.  There is a lot of positivity in that move without even considering the coaching aspect.   Anybody who sees something negative here is just looking for negativity to begin with.  But some live in that world.   Really good hire for Brent.  He now has two experienced and quality coordinators and can concentrate on being a head football coach.
    • He was pretty darn good for a freshman, but he will have a hard time seeing the field at Oakland for a good while, I’m afraid.
    • Dang I feel bad for the kid. I’m sure he loves his dad and wants to do anything for his dad but I don’t think he realizes his dad isn’t doing the best for his football career if he keeps jumping schools.
    • I’m not taking shots at the kid, but “athlete” is not something I would use to describe him. He was a long, lengthy, defensive back
    • Mistakes like that should never happen.
