I see you've done your homework on the BEARS defense. The BEARS defense is better than last year but I will agree on the part about playing 10 yards off the ball. I'm not a fan of it. This MJ team has done much better than I expected this year. I predicted at the beginning of the year that we would probably be gone after the 2nd round. We lost like 16 starters from last year's team so this will be a different team. I thought after the end of last season that Whitehaven would win it all this year and will stick to that. The only negative that I've seen with Whitehaven is discipline.(That was last year) I have not seen them play this year but know they returned alot of key players. Too much size in the trenches and speed everywhere else. MJ will have to play their best game of the year and catch a few breaks along the way to pull this one out. Upsets do happen in all levels of football and hopefully this will be another one. I still have nightmares of last year game. I do believe this one will be a little closer but Whitehaven has just too much for anyone in the state this year. Go out there BEARS and prove me and many others out there wrong.Reguardless what happens in this one these BEARS have been fun to watch and a surprise team this year. Go BEARS!

MJ has a very "explosive" looking offense with the sweeps to multiple backs and running #2 in between the tackles. The QB looks like he has a cannon and #3 looks good on thee outside. Nice Looking ATH.

I still don't see how Dickson Co. and Brentwood Linemen were getting BLOWN of the Ball and why their LBs couldn't Scrape well enough to stop those big gains to just 2-3 yard gains?!?!? I have full faith and confidence that A. Collins and the other LBs for Whitehaven will be BLOWING those sweeps up! BTW MJ hasn't seen anything like Big Dre Smith at DT not to mention Gerald Bates...

Defensively, MJ is Suspect and is good as Toast LOL!

Yall have NO ONE that can check any of our Wide Outs. If the DBs play off ten yards, it will be a Problem... If the DBs want to bump and run (I know yall won't try that  ) yall got Real Problems, Real FAST! And if Those safeties want to keep their eyes in our backfield instead of on their Keys we'll be up by 4 TDs before yall can say Derek Dooley Sux B)

If Whitehaven plays their A-game and MJ does the same... Whitehaven Wins, No disrespect, we're just :hungry:

From The Wilson Post:

MJ Bears storm into 6A final four

Friday, November 16, 2012

McCathern runs for 239-yards

BRENTWOOD -- Senior Contrez McCathern powered Mt. Juliet to a 31-20 victory over Brentwood in Friday's Class 6A quarterfinal -- a game that was never as close as the score might indicate. Coach Roger Perry's team led 31-7 with 3:50 to go in the game before the Bruins tacked on a couple of late scores.

Lining up at tailback for much of the ball game, McCathern rambled for a season-high 239 yards on 35 carries and scored once.

Now 12-1 on the season, the Golden Bears travel to Shelby County next Friday for a semifinal date with 13-0 Whitehaven -- a 52-7 winner over Germantown.

Leading 3-0 after a booming 47-yard field goal by Ryan Jenkins, Mt. Juliet's defense held Brentwood on a fourth and goal at the two-yard line as Chase Mang spilled Ben Green for a three yard loss. The Bears proceded to march 95 yards on 11 plays, all on the ground, to take a 10-0 lead with 5:57 left in the first quarter. "I'm not so sure that the goal line stand wasn't the difference in the game," Coach Perry said, "Brentwood is a good team, and to hold them out right there gave us a tremendous swing in the momentum."

Leading 17-7 with 4:46 to go in the third period, Mt. Juliet put the game out of reach with 1 16-play, 80 yard scoring drive that chewed up 8:56 on the clock and ended with ben Cheatham scoring from 10-yards out for a 24-7 lead. All told, Mt. Juliet piled up 389 yards, all on the ground, on 60 carries.Ben Chaplin added 93 yards on eight carries and scored once while Caleb Hopkins added two touchdowns with six carries for 22 yards.

Brentwood ended the season 11-2 overall and was led by senior quarterback Austin Winfree who finished 10-for-19 passing for 167 yards. ben Green ran 14 times for 95 yards.

From the Tennessean:

Mt. Juliet grinds out win over Brentwood

Mt. Juliet simplifies offense to allow backs to use power

By Chip Cirillo | The Tennessean

12:00 AM, Nov. 16, 2012 EST

Brentwood - Mt. Juliet runs a Wing-T offense, but Contrez McCathern looked like an I-formation tailback on Friday night. McCathern rushed for 254 yards and one touchdown on 37 carries, leading the Golden Bears to a 31-20 win over Brentwood in a Class 6A quarterfinal.

Fifth-ranked Mt. Juliet (12-1) will go to No. 3 Whitehaven (13-0) in a semifinal rematch next Friday. Whitehaven beat the Bears 44-10 last year. "I've never touched the ball that many times in one game," McCathern said. "The most I've ever touched it (before) was probably about 17 times. My coach (Roger Perry) said, 'Ss soon as we start the game we're going to put it on them, and see if they can handle it up the middle.' The first four plays he said we were going to hit them in the mouth, and so we did."

Brentwood's defense allowed an average of 9.5 points in its first 12 games, but the eighth-ranked Bruins (11-2) had no answer for McCathern. "I don't know how many tackles (McCathern) ran through from us," Brentwood coach Mark Pemberton said. "He broke tackle after tackle. Actually, we were in good shape defensively a lot of times, but he just broke tackles so that says a lot about the kid."

Ryan Jenkins' 47-yard field goal and two running touchdowns by Caleb Hopkins gave Mt. Juliet a 17-0 halftime lead. Ben Green's 5-yard touchdown run narrowed the deficit to 17-7 with 4:46 left in the third quarter.

Mt. Juliet answered with an 80-yard, 15-play drive that included two fourth-down conversions. Ben Cheatham's 11-yard run put Mt. Juliet up 24-7 with 7:44 left in the game.

The Bears converted their first fourth down from their own 40 on a fourth-and-1 with McCathern running for a yard. "As good as Brentwood's defense is, that makes you nervous, but fortunately we got it," Perry said. "I knew our guys were capable of doing that."

Brentwood's Austin Winfree passed for 177 yards and one TD. "We played our hearts out and came up a little short today," Bruins running back Ben Green said. Brentwood's Aaron Maher and Sam Mullaney left the game with injuries

Hard to 'Respect Da Haven' when their band plays the entire time the opposing offense has the ball. As Senator would say, #classy

Snuffy:

I'm going to explain something to you and others who think like you. Whitehaven and the teams we play against on a regular basis have a different 'culture' when it comes to the high school football atmosphere then a lot of others in Tennessee across the state. There was a thread several years back that talked about this very thing. I didn't understand what all of the 'hoopla' was about until I started reading what others thought about 'bands playing during the game'. What I learned is that most other folks think like you. It's NOT CLASSY, CHEATING, so on and so forth. So ... I told them what I am telling you and others who come from a 'culture' where that type of thing is frowned upon.

It's how Whitehaven and other City of Memphis public city schools play football. It's part of the atmosphere. Our band plays when WE have the ball and they play when our OPPONENTS have the ball. The other teams bands does the same thing. IF you grew up in this type of atmosphere as a fan or a player ... you are use to it ... you expect it ... If it doesn't happen you begin to wonder ... "What's wrong with their band?" I love it. Theirs is nothing like it when your defense makes a big stop and then your band breaks out in one of your 'anthems' that gets the whole crowd excited. Imagine my surprise when I read posters like you who think it's 'CLASSLESS". It's a beloved part of the Friday night experience for Whitehaven and others from the city of Memphis who partake.

However, now that Whitehaven is making a name for themselves across the state, I've noticed something different this year. The band rarely plays during the game and they DON'T play when the game is being played, regardless of who has the ball. I first noticed it at the Whitehaven verses White Station game. That is a BIG RIVARLY game. Throughout the game the White Station band (Which has grown exponentially in size to rival Whitehaven's band, if not bigger) played while our band sat there and only played during dead periods. I suspect that the Whitehaven administration has heard from others across the state during last years run to the State Championship game about how 'Classless' our program is because of that tradition. This year Whitehaven has changed it's way of doing things. When in Rome ... you know the saying. It has never been a 'sportsmanship' issue. It is a 'culture' issue. We are as hospitable as other programs throughout the state. The band is a part of the game experience ... not just for entertainment at halftime. But ... in order not to offend anyone ... the band only plays during dead periods now. I hate it ... but I understand it. Otherwise, we will constantly have people like you who come on forums like this and tell anyone who will listen how 'Classless' Whitehaven is. It's a tradition that we are putting aside because it offends others outside of our circle of City teams we play against. It's for the best in the long run ... but I hate it personally, but I understand the 'why'.

Hey Dannyq

Hey Dannyq, is the visitor seating fairly large or should we pack some extra chairs for plan B? Mj usually travels well but you never know how many will make the trip with the holiday weeked and the dreaded "BLACK FRIDAY" shopping crazies!

firefighter3387:

Our visitors stands are large and expansive. I haven't seen a visiting team come in and not have room to sit. The last game only filled the visitors side to about 40% capacity. I was surprised that THAT MANY GERMANTOWN fans came. I was glad to see that.

We have more then adequate lit parking. I doubt it very seriously that you will fill our visitors side. If you bring as many to this game as you did last year when the game was played at your place, you will have room to sit comfortably.

Whitehaven is very good but don't look past this MJ team-

You don't make it to the semifianls over looking opponents. That will have you packing your equipment in moth balls. Whitehaven is locked and loaded with MJ in their sights. Last years game was exaclty that ... last years game. This is 2012 and the game this week is against the 2012 Bears ... not the 2011 Bears. Looking over a team is pure foolishness.

This MJ team has been underestimated for a lot of the year especially here at the end of the season. Ever since the WC game people have doubted them and really didnt think they would make it that far in the playoffs. This team fights and has progressivly gotten better throughout this year. The coaching staff should be commended. The athletes have bought in and will be prepared. I can not wait to travel to Memphis this Friday to see a great game.

I don't know why others would doubt MJ. Sounds foolish to me. They ONLY made it to the semi's last year in 6A. (Sarcasm) If the other teams doubted MJ ... then MJ showed them!

Come on down and enjoy the game! By the way, I don't know if you MJ fans are aware, but the Whitehaven field is AT, not grass. It was installed this year ... brand spanking new. It looks great. No mud anywhere! You will love playing on it. I know we do!

MJ will be ready to play but the speed of Whitehaven might be to much. I believe in my boys and their coaches putting in their head revenge! MJ- 24 Blackhaven- 14

I understand using the 'revenge' emotion to motivate your troops. It may last about 4 minutes into the 1st quarter ... then after that, it's all scheme, talent, coaching, and the other intangibles. Emotion only carries you so far against a quality opponent.

    • I've always been a football fan first and then if you have a band that's awesome. No question that DB has one of the best bands in the country and the whole region should attend at least one DB game just to see their band. I don't know if Nick Saban could come to Kingsport and build a football program that could match the Dobyns Bennett band's success. That said,as mentioned before, a couple of things would have to change in order for the Tribe to just win a state championship on the field.Besides a program that starts from the peewee teams and goes all the way to J Fred with all coaches and weight training { in time }on the same page. Sometimes it also takes a little luck like the 1998 Vols .There are a lot of great athletes at a lot of big schools around the state and just because you want something doesn't mean your going to build a program like Alcoa has. Yes,start at the bottom and have guys that are quality coaches teaching at every level is 100% the first step. Parents can make it a lot easier by getting their young athletes into an early start with conditioning and weights as well when they are old enough to lift.If your son is a man in the weight room before he gets to DB , then it won't take a "Dobbs" coach to make him competitive against other schools athletes when it comes to strength.
    • Dyersburg scrimmaged South Gibson last week
    • A complete cultural change happened at Greeneville and the administration and community opened up their checkbooks.  What a lot of people don't know is Ballard was Zeller's OC for many years and stopped coaching for two years because Zeller and Ballard didn't see eye to eye on some things.  Zeller lead Greeneville to it's first ever Semi Final appearance in 2000 and lost 28-12 at Maryville and had them in the Quarter Finals in 2002 and 2003.  Z was a great coach but lost some control when it came to making workouts mandatory. (He learned from that Mistake and it was at LC when i coached with him.).  Z was let go going into my Senior Year and was replaced by Steve McCurry who was the one that turned the program around.  Steve had won a 4a state championship at AC Reynolds in Asheville and made the administration completely redo the weight room with new equipment, had a football period at the end of the school day to lift, started devil camp, and brought in coaches like Danny Bentley (Still the OL coach), Ballard as the OC, Cody Baugh (QB coach and still there), and even Spradlen who is Greeneville's head coach now as the DB's Coach.  McCurry only coached for two seasons at Greeneville and took a team that had a losing record the year before and finished my Senior Year making it to the Quarters and having a 10-3 record and then followed it up with a Semi Final appearance the next year with an 11-3 record and back to back conference championships.  Loved McCurry to death but the recession hit and the story i heard was he was still buying new equipment for the team that the Principal didn't authorize and his response was "I don't answer to you and only to Niswonger and Bewley" (Two huge donors).  That was it for him and they Promoted Ballard shortly after that.   Greeneville had always been relevant ever since the the late 70's under Coach Fred Sorrell's.  Since Sorrell's took over in 1977 Greeneville overall winning percentage is over 76%.  The biggest reason people might not have thought Greeneville was "Good" until Ballard was Greeneville always played up Classification wise and could never get over the hump. (When there were 3 classifications we played 3a, when it went to 5 we played 4a).  Greeneville is the largest its ever been with 953 students and where playing teams 2 or 3 times there size back in the day (I had a little over 800 kids in the school when i graduated in 2008).  Other teams always would know they would be sore after a game but depth took over and never won a Championship until Greeneville played in the classification the TSSAA actually assigned them. You had names like Dustin Moore (1993 Mr Football for 3a and who Phillip Fulmer said was one of the greatest athletes he ever recruited), James "Mud Turtle" Mayes, Brigham Lyons, Byron Gillespie, Frankie Debusk (National Champion Qb at Furman with GQ), Jasmine Lowery, Cody Baugh, The Greenway Brothers, Joe Watson (Furman), etc.  Now the cultural is from the Pee Wee league up and you grow up as a young kid wanting to wear the Greene and White.  Here is a really good link when it comes to anything Greeneville Football related. https://greenevillefootball.com/   I also don't coach anymore.  Z told me i was to smart with how the school systems are ran these days and ended up going into real estate in Knoxville which has been a great decision for my life.
    • Yes, they will. I'm wondering what kinds of strides Sale Creek will make heading into the second season under Coach Fitz.
    • No yellow stripes on the rug last night. Biggest crowd I’ve seen at 825 since the alco debacle.
