2000 students, but over 1200 are non English speaking. 41 different languages spoken. They are no longer the tea sippers. Johnny O just doesn't get the athletes they used to. That zone has flipped quite a bit. Most of the Crieve Hall kids are now at CPA, Lipscomb, Ryan etc. when they used to go to JOHS.

I told everybody 3 years ago when I taught there that it was coming.  You will see it in all sports over there.

Glencliff is in the same boat as Overton. .  Hunters Lane is to an extent, but not nearly as much as Overton and Glencliff. And Whites Creek is even less so. So what accounts for them being so bad? Is it possible that Maplewood is attracting some of the public school talent in that part of the county?

I hear excuses. Terry Anderson dealt with the same dynamics. Overton has had talent in the last 4 years. The zone may not be as strong but kids that are zoned may not want to attend overton because of the decline.

Terry did not deal with the issues and demographics that John Overton has today and it's not even close.  IMO, what should happen is Hillsboro should close and the students that live on the HHS side of Hillsboro Pike should be zoned to Overton and the kids that live on the Green Hills Mall side of Hillsboro Pike should attend the new Bellevue High School.  On the other side of Overton the zone should not cross Nolensville Road.  The true facts are that MNPS are really open zoned and if they provided an activities bus for kids that participated in after school activities like some other major cities the participation numbers would increase.  It's difficult to participate in after school activities if you don't have a ride home.

But would Overton be better with TA still the coach?

I don't know if Overton would be any better if Terry was still the coach or not.  Just by looking,  the remainder of the schedule for Overton  appears as if they will struggle to have a winning record this season.  TA was old school and wanted to run the ball 98% of the time and pass the ball 2% of the time.  I am not sure that kids want to play in that type of offense but winning takes care of many problems.

Kids want to win first and foremost. Old school is still winning many games at many levels. Running backs love that style of play. I dare say Overton has more RB type that WR type and OL to match. I think new coaches like this offense more than kids do . Also only offense most even know.

You may be correct but let's be honest and say that due to the idiots at MNPS John Overton will never be what they were in the 70's, 80's and 90's

TA actually did deal with the same issues as there are today at Overton. The last few years of his time there was about like it is today. Now the first 15 years you would be correct. TA was probably more prepared to deal with it because it's what he knew. When TA was at Hillsboro in the 80s Hillsboro was metros ESL school. Once the ESL population grew those kids were spread out more. If I'm not mistaken I think Glendale is still an ESL elementary/middle school. TA also spent enough time at Overton to watch it gradually become what it is today. Just my 2 cents worth. By the way Overton has gotten pretty good at soccer.

Scheme doesn’t match personnel hasn’t for a few years... Overton has always had a Big  OLine and running backs, they still do. Sometimes coaches care more about “their” scheme than running what works best for the personnel they may have.

That being the only scheme they know or like you said they want to run. I am pretty sure last year's and this year's OC does not know or want to run a run based offense. All about the flash!!

The decision of which scheme is ran is up to the head coach. He may deligate installation and play calling to an assistant,  but the head coach is ultimately responsible for all aspects of the team.  Anyone not qualified to make these decisions should not be a head coach.

Irregardless of scheme, TA had a system that he u understood fully that his players had confidence in and that his team executed. This is no longer the case.

There are many immigrant students at Overton just like there has been for more than a decade. However,  many more now choose to play ball elsewhere because they have lost faith in the program.

    • The Girls Basketball team I am a part of played for a gold ball this season. One of the biggest differences in the sports is that there is no field prep/maintenance in basketball.   Our baseball is successful and play 30 games in the regular season as well. All of the teams dedicate A LOT of time in preparing for their next opponent.
    • Im pretty excited about the new rules that NFHS voted to adopt. Does anyone know if this will take place in Tennessee starting this year? I think I heard/read somewhere that the TSSAA bi-laws say they have to mirror what the NFHS does, and when the NFHS offered the current weight classes as options, TSSAA didn’t adopt them until NFHS made them official. Did NFHS make these changes official starting next season or will it be similar to the weight classes where TSSAA doesn’t change what they are doing until it is  an officially official part of the NFHS rule book? It’ll be interesting to see if it is rolled out for the new TSSAA Middle School season and I saw a post where the youth wrestling in TN was going to vote on adopting it as well.  I’ll pray for all the youth coaches that will have to shoulder the confusion from all those crazy #### parents who already think they know the rules more than everyone else  . Imagine the first time their kid is taken down and a 3 goes up on the scoreboard or their kid gets pinned with only one point of contact in the cylinder. Their heads might explode. i kid, I kid. Sort of. I’m surprised ride time was brought down with all the other changes. I know some argue that it promotes stalling on top, but its been an official scoring method in college forever, so I figure it must be doing something right. Do any of you think that’ll ever be implemented?
    • I understand I guess it depends on the school you are with and the time you want to put in.  It’s evident of the schools that don’t put in as much times.  I would say basketball players put in as much time as any sport in our school system and this is coming from a football town.  Bball is a longer season than other sports.
