My viewpoint originates from being involved in starting up the program at the school I attended (no program in my day), and seeing what it meant to those kids just to have the opportunity to participate that I did not. Of course they had weekly dreams of winning whatever game was next on the schedule, but the point is that the reality of "getting their skull beat in" didn't mean that they didn't relish the journey . What mattered to them had nothing at all to do with state championships or college scouts, but wearing the uniform on Friday night with their teammates in front of their community, and giving their coach the best effort that they could manage. Twelve years in...we've played in a quarterfinal game and several kids have gotten financial assistance from football, but the best example of "success" that I can quote from having football here would be an e-mail that Coach got the day after graduation from a kid who had no dad at home and was frequently in trouble. On the night he received his diploma, he "celebrated" by composing a letter crediting his graduation to Coach...maybe the most remarkable thing is that the coach had taken another job the year previous and was at another program. Awesome stuff. Things like this is why I do what I do.
