I played for Springfield in 93, we were expecting to play Marion Co with Eric Westmoreland, but McMinn Central upset them in the semis, I remember it like yesterday...

I was there as a 11yrs old kid....freezing! Their for about a 4/5 yr span the Jackets had some ballers and very good teams. One game away from a return to the Clinic Bowl during that time. My wife was cousin to Jeremy Thaxton on that team.

For those of you who think that consistently playing better competition makes you a better team, why is Boone not considered the front-runner in 5A?

Playing better competition does help a team in the long run, but you also need to win one or 2 of those close ones.

Every season we play teams like Elizabethton, Greeneville, Science Hill, Dobyns-Bennett, etc..     and still choke in round 1 of the playoffs.           I am in the minority here because I am not convinced that playing stiff competition always makes you better, in a lot of cases it beats you down to the point you no longer try.

I agree with that point 100%.  You need to have a balance, tough games and winnable games to keep confidence up. Then with the confidence you can win the tougher games later on.

Don't count Knox West as a contender. They'll choke in typical Lamar fashion around the 3rd/4th round. @HTV

Is that being fair to West?  Just asking. What are the teams they choked against in the 3rd/4th round? My guess is Central both years the Bobcats won State. Maybe Catholic. Last year's State Runner-ups Oak Ridge.

I know you know this but do not forget the Knoxville area had many dominant teams lately.

    • I grew up watching Greene Devil Football since I could walk and still close with a lot of the coaches so should know my history pretty well lol.  Everything worked out the way it should have but firmly believe McCurry would have won some State Title if he wouldn't been let go (Greeneville still runs the same D he brought here and he let Ballard run the O and stayed out of it when it came to calling plays.  Greeneville was put out in the Semi's McCurry's last year against Maryville and the next year Greeneville stayed in 4a and was State Runner up playing were they were placed for the first time by the TSSAA.). It was definitely a McCurry and Ballard show that turned everything around along with the Community buying in and revamping the weight room and field house. Since Ballard got promoted to HC every Coach after him has been within the Greeneville Coaching staff because your right, they know what it takes to win a state championship.  Ballard was a master mine on O and what i think Greeneville has lacked since he left and let some Championships or making it to the Championship slip away over the last few years
    • Sounds like you know your area history well. Going back and looking the records were better than I thought but mostly still beating Upper East TN schools. Ballard sounds like he came/was promoted at the right time.    I do think it’s no coincidence that them keeping the HCs as guys who were former guys on the staff. Too many times schools want a “state championship” leveled coach from the outside but they don’t know the landscape. Promoting from within will help with less turnover and keep the program consistent.
    • You’re a fool if you think I have more than one account
    • Looking back they had better records than I recalled against upper East TN.  But they still took off once ballard got there. And beating other good programs
