I played with Ralph King for a couple of years at Riverdale and he was awesome. Set rushing td records for the state, scored over a 100 tds in his career and didn't play much as a sophmore!!!

No one has mentioned Orlando "Papa" Wade - Spring Hill - '85-'86. Won back to back Mr. Football awards. Full ride to Mississippi State. Fell in with the wrong crowd & never made much noise in college - dropped out after a couple of years.

These are some old school players I either played with,watched, or played against that left a very big impression.

I agree with whoever said Shawn Bryson was a better fullback at UT. Fleming obviously has the stats to make the claim of being the best back, but between Al Wilson and Eric Westmoreland I don't think there is any question it's got to be one of them.

Everybody has their favorite and you can tell the age of most people on here by who they pick! Troy Fleming has the stats. Football has changed so much over the years, one constant is who has been ranked the highest as a prospect nationally and had the biggest impact on the game. I suggest we break it down into modern football and old timers.

 

As far as Old timers Bobby Cifers from Dobyns-Bennett was ranked as the #1 RB and the #1 overall prospect in America in 1939 and was the first nationally recruited Tennessean and put Tennessee high school football on the national map!

 

In the modern era Leroy Thompson has been the highest ranked RB nationally, I think he was rated the #2 or #3 RB in the country in 1986. Although Troy Fleming had impressive career stats I don't think he was even rated in the top 10 his senior year.

 

Has anyone else ever been ranked in the top 10? If I was guessing maybe Albert Davis from Alcoa, Curtis Alexander from Whitehaven, Xavier Crawford from Memphis(don't remember what school) or Orlando Wade from Columbia Central.

 

Even the legends like Johnny Majors and Johnny Butler were not highly ranked nationally.
