i dont have a prediction yet. whichever team can stop the run better than the other. that team will win. just as i posted on the milan game. i might be spending my whole weekend in murfreesboro this comming weekend. i'd like to watch all 5 games. in this game, both offensive and defensive lines have to execute in order to pull off the win. I do think Huntingdon will win. Play Huntingdon Football - Hit Somebody. Believe. I Believe.

OK let's cut out the speculation and childish ranting and talk facts.  As far as East vs. West in 2A, East has 4 gold balls and West 2 since the current system went into effect.  ALcoa, Sweetwater, Tyner and Webb have won from the east and Milan and Huntingdon have won from the West.  Middle has won 5 during that time frame split between Goodpasture and Lipscomb.  Milan has also won a 3A title during that span.

I didn't research 2A Mr. Football nominations cause I don't think it's worth the time.  The guys that are generally nominated (Rogers and Turner this year are prime examples) come from high profile programs that were strong the previous year, or big time college recruits.  Bolden from Tyner was another great example last year.  He was probably the best player in the division but he missed most of the season with injuries.  Yet he was still nominated (and won).  It happens every year and this year was no exception.  Weathers got a nomination because Huntingdon is the defending champ and he put up some huge numbers.  No doubt Lindsey deserves the recognition but he got overshadowed by preseason publicity.  You can bet at this point that a lot of voters have him Penciled in for next years ballot regardless of what happens during the 2005 season.

As far as press coverage, I don't know how much Alcoa gets cause I don't read East Tenn papers except for an occasional look at the New Sentinel and the Free Press.  I don't see a lot of high school coverage in either of these so they may be in the same boat as the rural West Tenn schools.  The Jackson Sun does a great job (IMO) of covering West Tenn football and usually tends to vote the teams around here higher than similar teams across the state.    I think the paper in Union City also has a vote in the AP poll but I may be wrong.

As far as the game goes, I look forward to seeing Alcoa for the first time.  I've heard some great things about them and know from what I've heard of their talent that they have some D-1 kids that will be on display.  Huntingdon has a sophomore who has D-1 talent as well but he's probably the only Mustang who has a chance to play D-1.  No doubt Alcoa has a great coaching staff and Coach Mansfield has proven his ability at Huntingdon.  BOth schools have a long winnng tradition though Alcoa has more Gold balls to show off.

I have been to many a Clinic/Blue Cross bowl over the years and the unknown element of playing someone entirely knew is what adds so much to an already intense competition.  I don't expect this to be any different.  COngratulations to both teams for being there, and good luck to both Friday night.  I hope both teams play to their full capabilities and determine the game on the field and injuries and striped jerseys don't determine the outcome.

Huntingdon will win this game. Alcoa has a great team but...... i'll guarantee you they haven't seen the kind of physical beating they'll get friday. You can argue back and forth all you want but i'd put milan or huntingdon against alcoa this year and both would physically dominate them.

Alcoa has seen 1 great defense. Maryville High Schools defense. Maryville held Alcoa to 12 points. The other 6 was on a kickoff return. Maryville is playing in the 4A title game. William Blount and Maryville were the only teams that slowed Alcoa down. Alcoa killed everyone else. Alcoa's offense is very balanced. They have 3 dangerous receivers in Brandon Warren,Kyrus Lanxster and Brian Summers. They have a quarterback who can get the ball to the playmakers. The offensive line is solid but the main thing is they have a stud at running back named Dustin Lindsey. Alcoa will be a handful for Huntington.

This game reminds me of the 2000 game against Union City!! UC was supposed to be more physical and faster than Alcoa, but we all know what happened in the first half of that game!! Alcoa just has too much speed and power for most of these teams!!! If Alcoa plays like they did against DL then i don't see them losing on Friday, and the gold ball will be back in Blount Co.!!!! thumb

Rumor has it that the Mustangs have a few of their own "studs in the stable". ;)

That's pretty odd. I could have sworn, about 3 weeks ago, or even as recently as a week ago, that Alcoa, Rockwood, David Lipscomb, and Goodpasture were all top 5 in the AP State Poll. But then again, I reckon I just don't get it. Haven't exactly heard enough about Huntington to make a comment about the score yet. Any intelligent breakdowns of the team would be appreciated.

Go Tornadoes!

Polls are useless. They're opinions man, and we all know what opinions are like.

From a Huntingdon perspective I think the game will be tough. We had played Lipscomb before and kinda knew what to expect from them. Lipscomb was more of a finesse team that liked to run the option some with counter plays and mix in a few passes. Huntingdon beat them last year in the Boro by being physical and putting pressure on the QB when they had to throw. Here in West Tennessee we don't know much about Alcoa but know their history and recognize their accomplishments. Don't mistake us for newcomers. Huntingdon has an overall record of 526-253 since 1930 (Modern Era) and we've been playing football here before the turn of the 20th century. I'm looking forward to seeing Lindsey play just like I know Alcoa should be excited to watch Chris Donald (sophomore) and "Boo" Weathers (Junior) play. Both teams seem to have high scoring capabilities. Can't wait till Friday! Go Big Blue!

    • Coalfield definitely isn't the same team they've had the past few years. They are still the favorites to make it out of their region because of their pitching. They have 1 arm that sits low to mid 80s and 2 other arms that are mid to high 70s with good off speed stuff. If you can avoid their top 3 bats in their lineup then you have a shot to beat them. Their 4-9 hitters are average at best. Wartburg's ace was able to shut them down last week in the game Wartburg won 4-2.
    • It is the longest season. Plus, 30 games a year. No Christmas break. I would say basketball is the most time consuming.
    • No movement on Chester? South Gibson? Gibson County?
    • Winfree's senior year was the season she needed to secure more college interest. That opportunity was taken away from her. A lot of false assumptions can be made about what happened and what the options are. Unfortunately, the former coach and administration did not allow Winfree to have due process. A lawsuit was filed for a reason, and it will run its course by people who conduct discovery and take depositions. Unless the parties settle out of court, a lot of the pertinent issues will come to the public surface. I wrote about many of the issues here: https://bdnewsletter.news/2023/11/17/grounds-for-investigation-and-suspension/ I interviewed Winfree after she was dismissed from the team and wrote about it here: https://bdnewsletter.news/2023/12/01/a-new-interview-with-sable-winfree/ Winfree had been on teams in Warren County since the fourth grade and never been dismissed from a team. The real questions are why was Winfree dismissed from the team, and why the administration backed a coach whom they did not rehire.
    • What is the hold up here? I have not heard anything in weeks. Are they waiting for the right person or is something else going on?
