  1. Maybe the Greatest Oak Ridge Athlete Jackie Pope passed away last week. Jackie played for the Wildcats in the mid to late 50's. In order to understand what a great football stud Jackie was is to know one stat. In 1958, he rushed for over 17 yards per carry leading Oak Ridge to be named Tennessee State Champions and National Champions. Mr. Pope was just as great a person as he was an athlete. After a very successful College career he settled down in Oak Ridge and became an inspirational leader to many young Oak Ridgers. He will be remembered and always missed. My prayers go out to Jackie and his family plus all those he inspired. RIPand RWR!

  2. Until post season is driven by performance of teams instead of the Most dollars that can be generated for the T$$AA, it will never be for the kids or the folks that really appreciate ANY of the sports the T$$AA over sees!

  3. Being that you are from Jasper why would you want to be on the Pirate fan page?

  4. No doubt about it. They are easily one of the top 5 teams in 2A this season. They will still be good in 2022 as well, but I think this 2021 team could be a little better.

  12. Maybe this is the shot heard 'round the country that will ensure that a little more transparency comes out. I have no problem with them maintaining a working fund balance, but amassing a kings ransom of unpledged/unused funds isn't what TSSAA should be about, nor paying countless employees excessive wages. If your mission is to help our kids, then make it about the kids.

  15. What does it mean “to share” the athlete. Does it mean while one team is in season and the other is not? Or, does it mean two different teams at the same time? Regardless the situation as a coach I will give you my perspective. When you are ‘in season’ you do not want to share your athlete for fear your athlete will get hurt doing something else and then you no longer have that athlete. This one athlete could make the difference between the team making the playoffs and not. For that matter you don’t want that athlete to even participate in gym class or lift weights on the day of a match. It sounds a little selfish but I have seen so many kids over the years get hurt and then cannot compete. Once your teams season is completed regardless of the reason you can no longer hold that athlete and they should be free to do whatever. In addition, I tell my athletes playing fall sports that as soon as the summer dead period is completed they can no longer work out with us because their obligation is to fall sports. Until then they are free to do as they choose. I go to camp in June and I take football/track/cross country/whatever sport kids with me. Once our season is completed (mid Feb) my kids are free to move on to the next sport if they choose to or they are welcome to start back in the weight room with us and those who do not play spring sports. Once fall sports are completed I allow the kids to take a few days off to decompress and then they are expected in the room. If the fall sport makes the playoffs I wait longer. As a wrestling coach I could find myself waiting until mid November for kids if football goes deep into the playoffs. I will wait for them. Beech is a perfect example of this. On the other hand if a coach tells an athlete they cannot play another sport outside his season and uses the threat of not playing them then I say that Coach is selfish and he hurts himself. Is that Coach gonna hold out a great athlete the next season because that kids wants to play another sport? I think not especially if that kid is a stand out player. I am a firm believer in cross training athletes and I believe that certain sports do compliment each other. An example is football and wrestling. I get beat up every time I say it but it’s true and nobody can give me a valid reason why it isn’t outside of silly and sometimes outright stupid remarks. I have wrestlers running track and playing soccer right now. I also have wrestlers working out with football. They aren’t learning wrestling but they are developing skills like foot speed and agility and a football tackle looks very similar to a double leg takedown. For that matter every time the ball is snapped there are several 5-10 second wrestling matches taking place on the line of scrimmage. There are some very special kids out there and they are good at whatever they do. If they choose one sport only then let them. If they want to try other things let them do that as well. A great athlete will compliment any team and why hold them and that team back? Just be reasonable, after all we are teaching them more than a sport.

  16. I no longer have any inside connections with the Tomcats, but I know we have some good players returning, and I'm hearing some good things about the rookies. Glad to hear the Cats are focused. They'll definitely have to be focused to compete in this region. I'm going to remove Cordova from the schedule that I posted last night based on Cordova's schedule on Coach T and on the TNFCA website. There's no indication of a game between the Wolves and the Cats on those two sites. I guess we need to wait until something official is announced. 08/20 open 08/27 open 09/03 at Crockett Co.* 09/10 at Lexington 09/17 Milan* 09/24 Melrose 10/01 Jackson North Side* 10/07 Lake Co. 10/15 at South Gibson* 10/22 Covington 10/29 at Obion Co. Central* *Region 7-4A Keep posting. We need some more Haywood fans getting active on this thread. Once a Tomcat, always a Tomcat!

  17. Everyone thought Alcoa was moving up to 4a also. So no we didn't run from no dern Alcoa stop it. Far as 4a we know all about it, we have 2 state titles in 4a, plus we just were in cookeville in 2015 playing for championship also. Pearl Cohn has two gold balls and two silver balls. No Pearl Cohn built different!!!

  18. I have watched the current/ last staff let kids be disrespectful to coaches and teammates and quit only to come back apologize and be back playing....People can say what they want, but if you let one do it, it sets the tone for everyone else. I like old school football coaches that would have you so sick after practice that you would have to sit in the bleachers next week for that kind of foolishness. That said you have to be willing to learn and grow as a coach. player, program or you will eventually get passed up by those that do.

  22. Y'all have the same amount of rings . With way less talent ..chirp chirp ..y'all ran from Alcoa to 4a chirp chirp ... it won't be easy there neither , you're going to have to coach sooner or later . I see several people get on here and have so much insight and negative comments and they can't coach out of a wet paper bag . Another guy goes around town bad mouthing every candidate for the job to help his son when actually he hurts him. He needs more years and to learn more period. Overton is not the same Overton from TA area, they got a good coach who can help turn it around as much as it can Good luck to AB and Overton .
