Donovan Stewart

Recommended Posts

We just spoke on the telephone not even 2 weeks ago and had a great conversation and he was very excited about his magazine being released for a second straight year.  I’m in shock and am heartbroken that he is no longer with us.  Hug those you love even closer tonight and tell them how much they mean to you.

Not ashamed to admit that I have shed some tears today over losing a friend like this.

Tell your friends you care, because you just never know what is going thru their minds.

Life is difficult.

Donovan Stewart will be missed. I hope that there is something the high school football community in Tennessee can do to show their appreciation of him and to help his children.

He kept up with the entire state very well. I have not seen one person do a better job at covering the entire state in the past 20 years on a day-to-day basis.

I did not know Donovan personally, but I did communicate with him. I always checked to see what he was writing about. He made a good contribution as a sportswriter and as a devoted fan of Tennessee high school football.

As I am sure that a lot of you have already heard, the cause of death was suicide. Please pray for the family.

And for his friends. Shortly after my graduation, one of my closest friends was here one day and gone the next by his own hand...I don't know if or when I will ever fully escape the guilt of "did I miss something" or "was there anything that I could have done" to change the outcome. Don't agonize over something you have zero control over as I did for many years following...you won't find anything there no matter how many nights you spend analyzing every conversation that you can recall in your mind.

A lot of others have said exactly what I've been feeling. Just awful news.

I'll never know what Donovan was going through, but please be kind to others. And teach your kids/grandkids to show that same genuine kindness. You'd be surprised what a smile or a kind word/gesture can do, even for a complete stranger. The world desperately needs more of that.

    • Did this happen? Does anyone know? Ripley has their HC job posted on the bulletin board over the weekend.
    • Coalfield definitely isn't the same team they've had the past few years. They are still the favorites to make it out of their region because of their pitching. They have 1 arm that sits low to mid 80s and 2 other arms that are mid to high 70s with good off speed stuff. If you can avoid their top 3 bats in their lineup then you have a shot to beat them. Their 4-9 hitters are average at best. Wartburg's ace was able to shut them down last week in the game Wartburg won 4-2.
    • It is the longest season. Plus, 30 games a year. No Christmas break. I would say basketball is the most time consuming.
    • No movement on Chester? South Gibson? Gibson County?
    • Winfree's senior year was the season she needed to secure more college interest. That opportunity was taken away from her. A lot of false assumptions can be made about what happened and what the options are. Unfortunately, the former coach and administration did not allow Winfree to have due process. A lawsuit was filed for a reason, and it will run its course by people who conduct discovery and take depositions. Unless the parties settle out of court, a lot of the pertinent issues will come to the public surface. I wrote about many of the issues here: https://bdnewsletter.news/2023/11/17/grounds-for-investigation-and-suspension/ I interviewed Winfree after she was dismissed from the team and wrote about it here: https://bdnewsletter.news/2023/12/01/a-new-interview-with-sable-winfree/ Winfree had been on teams in Warren County since the fourth grade and never been dismissed from a team. The real questions are why was Winfree dismissed from the team, and why the administration backed a coach whom they did not rehire.
