Can USJ finally get a gold ball?

Milan, Huntingdon, Westview, Humboldt, Peabody, JCS (when they were coming off a state championship), Dresden and USJ.

In retrospect, that region was even more stacked than it seemed at the time.

At least four of those teams have played for gold balls since then. Think the others have made semis.

I'm out of the loop. How has USJ looked in scrimmages? Saw in the Sun they had 80 players out.

Kublah-

Sorry for not answering as I have had some computer issues.  We have had 2 abbreviated scrimmages due to storms.  We looked ok at times and other times we look like we are playing against 4A schools which we are.  Coach Bradley played 44 kids the first scrimmage and wants to play more so everybody gets a shot.  We have about 70 kids out this year which as you know is big for us.  Lots of excitement and the kids are pumped, but many have not played before or haven't played in awhile and it shows at times.  They just need experience and the scrimmages will help.  New system is also trying for everyone especially for the older players because it is very different.  I think we will be ok, but as in anything new, its going to take some time.  Take care.

  • 2 weeks later...

I watched a few minutes of the 4th Q on point5 Digital and USJ went up 29-16 with 5 minutes left. FACS then turned the ball over on downs and I turned it off. What in the world happened? FACS had to score twice in 5 minutes and they didn't have the ball when I quit watching.

Missed assignments on D and poor conditioning.

What's worse, they quit competing.

There is a lot of talent on this team.

On defense, that talent is fast but young. On offense, it is a poor match for this scheme.

The offense may have produced more interceptions than completions on Friday night. If they run this offense the whole season, this team will go 3-7. That's one win for each D1 recruit on the team.

This team was not physically or mentally prepared to play.

Hey Kub- did you know this is the first outing for the quarterback? I don't mean a game and I don't mean a scrimmage- I mean at all? He's been out the entire offseason. Did you know once again we lost starting running backs and line backers in jamborees/scrimmages? I know teams go thru injuries but we have been decimated already before the season even started. Trey Smith is the only returning starter on the OL and the DL as well? Up by 14 with 5 picks against us and a screwy blocked punt and miracle plays at the end beat us in OT-our punter and best receiver out in the 2nd half hurt a lot -all I'm saying is calling a 3 win season is pretty harsh especially from a "friendly" supporter-I've been there all year and I know exactly how much conditioning they have done so frankly you saying the guys were unprepared means you don't know jack-it's the first game with a new coach with a new scheme with new players and you make the call after one game? Friday night was the first time in 15 years USJ lost to a less talented team.

They could not execute the game plan.

Half of the team missed time with cramps.

How is that prepared?

USJ's coaching staff has won a lot of games. Will they look at the film and see a prepared team? No.

I won't go into all of the little details, but the coaching staff sure will over the coming weeks.

Look at the schedule. All of these teams work hard. Is the USJ team that showed up Friday night going to beat ECS, BGA, Briarcrest, St. George's and Milan?

That said, there are some bright spots:

Once USJ went to the run game, they moved the ball at will.

The young defense has some playmakers and speed. The D-line is disruptive and will give every team fits.

USJ has NFL quality production in the kicking game.

USJ has a big O-line, led by the best player in the country. They have 4-5 capable running backs -- including #25 who runs as hard as his brothers and a speedy freshman named Willis.

If USJ goes under center, runs the ball 40 times a game, controls the clock and throws over the top off play action to their fast receivers, then this team can win 7-8 games...maybe more!

...But if they keep trying to fit a square peg into a round hole, then it's going to be a long year of second guessing why Marley was fired.

During the FACS game, USJ averaged 2.9 yards per carry. They ran for 96 total yards on 33 attempts.  You should do much better than that running behind Mr. Smith.

Good grief Kublah-is this the real Kublah posting? I have seen your posts over the years and you are usually so spot on and non-emotional. USJ may not win another game-I don't know. I think they will but I know it's going to take a little time as this is the first new coach they have had in 27 years and the previous one did not retire-

We haven't lost to a lesser team in 15 years?? What about Davidson Academy in 2012 when Garner got hurt and we were up 3 scores and when the sub came in and a few picks later we lost by one? Btw that team had Hensley, Spencer, Buckley, Glassman, etc

Half the team Fri nite went down with cramps? It was a lot but it wasn't 10, or 20 or 30--it was 6 or 7 with one very important one not making it back in the game at all.

We do have some bright spots and I don't know if the new scheme is going to work but don't we have to give it more than one game to find out?

Not even gonna comment about the rushing comment from the other guy-

Yes! It took one game for it to start!

First, when Mickey Marley heard that USJ lost to FACS on Friday, he probably had to smile and laugh for a little bit (my opinion). Let's be real, Mickey Marley got fired because he was not bringing a gold ball back to McClellan Road, not X's and O's. Was it time to let Marley go? Most people would say yes while others would say no.

When Rusty Bradley was at CAK, he had guys like Josh Smith and Charlie High. As of right now, Rusty doesn't have that those guys at USJ (not going to count Trey Smith because Trey is in his senior season). So he probably has to at least try to find a way to win "big" games without "elite" athletes for probably a few years.

Coach Bradley probably is not worried about his team. He knows that everything will come together and work fine. But they should not have lost to FACS on Friday. Have to steal one back before the critics will come out. Still believe they will take care of Trinity on Friday, that's my prediction. However, everybody at USJ will probably look at Coach Bradley and say "you got your playclocks, you got your locker room redone with televisions and video games, you got your practice field remodeled, now it's your turn Coach!" Everybody is going to compare the 2015 season and the 2016 in terms wins and losses, they just will.
