Fayetteville must forfeit seven high school football games and will miss the Tennessee high school football playoffs after the TSSAA determined the school played an ineligible transfer player in six of the school's first seven games.

The school must also pay a $600 fine.

Fayetteville was previously 9-0, 5-0 in Region 5-1A before the forfeits. The program is now 3-6, 0-5.

The TSSAA originally ruled the school must forfeit its first seven games, but the school provided information that the athlete was injured and did not play in a 43-12 win over non-region opponent Zion Christian, TSSAA assistant director Gene Menees told The Tennessean on Friday.

The transfer athlete did not move into the school system's territory, as defined by the TSSAA's bylaws, according to a letter to Fayetteville principal Adam McCormick from Menees.

 

The athlete's address was not within Fayetteville's city limits, which made it outside of the school's territory, the TSSAA determined.

The TSSAA's bylaws define a public school's territory as the "geographic boundaries and bus routes of the area served by that school as established by the local board of education," according to the letter.

Fayetteville city director of schools Janine Wilson wrote on Oct. 21 to the TSSAA that, under Fayetteville city school board policy, the board recognizes the lines of Lincoln County to be the defined territory and geographic area that the system serves.

However, the TSSAA reviewed the school system's website and wrote that according to the site, attendance at Fayetteville High School is open to all Lincoln County residents, but transportation is only provided by students in the Fayetteville city limits.

Old Pirate says the TSSAA refused to address the rules violations that made Whitwell player ineligible. The Whitwell player was far more of an impact player! Coacht fellers knowds theys more yet to be brought to accountability! Hate it for the players.

However, if you have to live within the bus routes, there is a lot of players in open zoned counties that could be ineligible. 

Also, like someone else said, some from Fayetteville said weeks ago that TSSAA investigated and cleared the player. If that's the case, the TSSAA has some explaining to do.

What's the chance of an appeal?

Any contact with a possible transfer by a coach before player is enrolled is clearly illegal. Jasper got busted fer that recently in regards to a player that eventually transferred to Whitwell. This type behavior run rampant during the glory days of the kinfolkes. OP never thought anyone could be better at it, but that was not true!

Yeah, something is off. The bus routes determine the school "zone?" If that statement is true then the TSSAA has a lot of work and investigating to do and a lot of teams need to just pack it up and stay home and get ready for basketball ... which would have a lot of ineligible players as well probably.

This part definitely confuses me. There has to be another way for players to become eligible outside school's bus routes, because it's been done and is being done a lot in our local county school system.

Are they tranfers within the county going to another school trying to transfer to the county school?

When my kids were young and middle school we lived in Loudoun County across the bridge where the Greenback buses did not come through I wanted to transfer my son to the high school in Greenback from Lenoir City I called T SS double A and they said if I lived in the county I had to move to where the school bus came by the house for him to be eligible automatically so I had to move across the river to where the Greenback buses came through
