Arlington v. Dyer County Postgame

This morning is my first time seeing this thread and it’s disheartening to see people try and justify this in any way.  The scene was horrific, they were yelling “kill that motherf*****” and “yeah y’all in memphis now” when they were all standing around jumping on him after coach Shield’s son hit him with his phone and she picked it up and handed it to her players and his friends and told them to make sure he gets that and they get out of there.  Dyer County coach didn’t even see it coming.  It still gives me a sick feeling to think about it.  I hope everyone involved gets what they deserve.

Wooddale started with a silly back and forth ball toss between players then fans got invovled.

No one got hurt and that one invovled fans way more than players. Actually the players didn't do much of anything but get heated. It ended quickly. TSSAA had the whole tape and saw it and made a decison. The other two games that night had punishment handed down.

That's a silly back and forth ? Guess I need to get out more.  Matters not much now. Still shocked TSSAA acted.

Wow really? Can you read?  I believe I wrote it in black and white.

Yes please show those films. So we can really see how the fans, green gobbling and his coaching staff were acting.

sadly the altercation happened and I will only agree with that.  On the other hand when I was 15 years old and I heard someone talking that much crap about my family or friends. I might have done the same thing. Who knows.

I can read rather well.

You said if it were you at 15 years old you don't know what would happen.

All of your other posts have implied (yes, implying is a skill when reading) that a physical attack is justified because of words someone else said.

You haven't denounced that yet.

You actually agreed with the altercation.

Watch the tape. It's out there. The Wooddale and Melrose players were acting tough and being stupid. Tossing a ball back and forth to/at each other. One of them pretends like someone is holding him back. I think it's one of the Lawson kids. They weren't going to do anything. The TSSAA has acted in the past and will continue to do so when they deem it appropriate.

The incident at Arlington was terrible. The TSSAA did the right thing. I image that McCord has a very good case for litigation and will probably win. I bet Arlington escorts all opposing teams and coaches from now on even if it's bowling. If they don't they're not very smart,

You shouldn't be so shocked. TSSAA brings the hammer down hard on physical altercations. We were "involved" in an incident two years ago in the last regular season game... postseason immediately over without possibility of review. After the film was reviewed by TSSAA we were absolved of any and all responsibility for the incident even though some of our players participated in self defense. Although it was good to be exonerated, it took months for TSSAA to come to a conclusion and decide to appropriately (IMO) punish one school and not the other. People thought TSSAA might look the other way because the game was over... games are sanctioned events, and aren't concluded until everyone is off campus.

So.......Kicking a player in the head, like it was the opening kickoff of the super bowl, while he is on the floor helpless is self defense???

Sometimes the schools take care of these things in a timely manner, sometimes outside punishment is needed. A couple of years back after a heated girls basketball game, one of the home team's players waited outside, after all the opposing players except 1 got on the bus she ran up behind her and punched her in the back of the head-then took off running. Another player was recording it on her phone. The player was thrown off the team and if I'm not mistaken was expelled or at least suspended from school the rest of the semester. Some schools have it together.

Not going to engage you in a back and forth concerning details. What TSSAA ruled after viewing multiple videos was that one team left their bench area prompted by the coach's actions, and initiated the physical altercation at the other teams bench... period.

EDIT

I'll go a little further... we're not proud of the fact that our kids threw punches (or kicks) at all. The ones who admitted or were visible on video were punished by our own administration, not TSSAA. Having said that, and in defense of the kids character who threw the kick... the person kicked was "on the floor defenseless" because he was thrown off the other kids back after jumping him from behind.

    • Im pretty excited about the new rules that NFHS voted to adopt. Does anyone know if this will take place in Tennessee starting this year? I think I heard/read somewhere that the TSSAA bi-laws say the have to mirror what the NFHS does, and when the NFHS offered the current weight classes as options, TSSAA didn’t adopt them until NFHS made them official. Did NFHS make these changes official starting next season or will it be similar to the weight classes where TSSAA doesn’t change what they are doing until it is  an officially official part of the NFHS rule book? It’ll be interesting to see if it is rolled out for the new TSSAA Middle School season and I saw a post where the youth wrestling in TN was going to vote on adopting it as well.  I’ll pray for all the youth coaches that will have to shoulder the confusion from all those crazy #### parents who already think they know the rules more than everyone else  . Imagine the first time their kid is taken down and a 3 goes up on the scoreboard or their kid gets pinned with only one point of contact in the cylinder. Their heads might explode. i kid, I kid. Sort of. I’m surprised ride time was brought down with all the other changes. I know some argue that it promotes stalling on top, but its been an official scoring method in college forever, so I figure it must be doing something right. Do any of you think that’ll ever be implemented?
    • Crazy how the thread just gets deleted when facts come out.
    • I understand I guess it depends on the school you are with and the time you want to put in.  It’s evident of the schools that don’t put in as much times.  I would say basketball players put in as much time as any sport in our school system and this is coming from a football town.  Bball is a longer season than other sports.
