My bad.  I've always thought of them as pretty much together.  anyway what's his record and history?

Doing this from memory, so the numbers may not be exact.

Scott started his head coaching career at West, won a 5A state championship there, then went to Cleveland.  He was at Cleveland for 3 or 4 years, didn't work out there, and he came back to Knoxville and was the coach at Halls for 3 years before today.

Thanks.

And as for drama, unless Knoxville (and OR) ain't like middle TN, there has to be drama when there's coaches moving all over creation.  It seems like there's more coaching moves than normal over that way.  Only close we've had around here lately is the pitt fiasco

Scott did a tremendous job building the program at West. He was there for 13 seasons (~2002-14). Took a program that had only had a few winning seasons in their entire history and turned them into a perennial contender; prior to his hiring, West had only won more than 8 games in a season once. It took awhile to get there, but the administration was patient, and it paid off. In his final 5 seasons, they won one title, were runners-up the previous year, and made the final 4 two other times.

He went to Cleveland for 4 seasons, and things didn't pan out for him there; finished .500 and never won a playoff game. Came back to Knoxville in 2019 and took over the Halls program. Did a decent job at Halls, considering the talent he had at his disposal. Honestly, I'm not really sure how much more he could have gotten out of the Halls gig, but he will have a lot more to work with at OR.

A lot of the "drama" in Knoxville stems from the fact that coaches here are paid peanuts. Scott will likely make a LOT more $$$ at OR (vs. any KCS gig).

When I think of schools that are going to hand you the keys and let you do whatever it takes to bring the program back I think of Alcoa, Maryville, Oak Ridge, Kingsport D-B and Cleveland far as East Tennessee goes. No doubt Scott did a great job at West especially his last five years there. I remember playing there many a time and you could count all their fans in the stands which was normally fifty or sixty people. West for some reason was the worst spinoff team from the old Knoxville High School for many years. I can still remember long time coach Bill Wilson having many 1-9 or 2-8 records plus many before him that had bad records. I can still remember back in the seventies West had a 18 man football team one year so that can tell you the depths and what rock bottom looked like over there. Think that's why I was so excited about them winning the championship that year and being there the year before. Guess the Cleveland job really shocked me considering they are one of my five schools I think of that would get out of your way and let you do whatever needs to be done. Maybe there's a problem at Cleveland that may not be able to be fixed because the last guy isn't having much luck either. Hopefully things work out and the new coach can get Oak Ridge back on top again.

    • RR, you might remember. Didn’t someone hide the kicking shoe that game? It seems I remember we had missed a kick the week before, and we needed all the points we could get. We thought we had a better chance going for two, so $?&@$ hid the shoe after the first miss that game. No one on our sideline looked for it very hard.
    • I will never forget the 1983 Heritage vs Maryville game. I remember driving home and listening to WGAP. Can't remember the announcers name. He asked Coach Story why he kept going for 2? Story told him " Why didn't you ask Renfro that last year"
    • TSSAA will let them all go to Mase.
    • Well nothing new, the Mustangs are really talented again this coming season!  They very well could go undefeated in regular season.  We shall see what happens in postseason.  I think the path to state title game is a little clearer than years past.  I think the Stangs are going to be really good and I think the traditional teams around in 2A are not going to be as strong.  It should be a fun season!
