  1. This used to be the system in a lot of places where you played with no classes. One state champion for the entire state. Basketball is definitely more conducive to having everyone in the same class than other sports (ie. Football). However, there is a reason why TN has five, soon to be six classifications. People like competing against schools their size, and having a more reasonable chance to win a title. It isn't to say small schools can't be as good, just a lower probability of it. That being said, I think we have too many classifications in most sports. Yet, I wouldn't be in favor of an end of the year tournament that pitted all the champs against each other. Season is long enough as it is. Plus, ending your season with a state title win is about as sweet as it gets. I wouldn't want to then have to turn around and try and earn some additional title, and potential finish with a loss instead.

  2. I have been wanting to put together a P4P for A-AA for a while. Just to show some love and appreciation to the smaller schools that sometimes get overlooked. There are some real hammers in this division and some fun potential match ups come time for State. Just to make this clear this is my opinion and I encourage others to voice their own opinions as well. 5. Indiana dropped the single-class tournament in 2007. Kentucky and Delaware are the last holdouts.

  6. Hey...talk about it all you want. We have to guard the 5 they put on the floor, and score against them. Mer was family and is still close to some of our kids. Differences of opinion happen and choices are made. I can speak for my family and my kid...we don’t hold anything against her. Hate that she left but it is what it is. We will toss the ball up Thursday and see what happens!

  7. Its interesting as there are no such statements on a timeframe in the TSSAA Handbook. I would have thought it to have been a little better publicized if they were doing it with that intention.

  10. Yes, but like I said, one of the benefits of winning a state title is finishing as one of the only teams in the state that gets to end their season, sometimes careers with a win. Something special about finishing your year on a high. By adding an extra tournament, you lose that, unless you win that "Tournament of Champions".

  11. I wasn’t suggesting an end to classification champs. Just a chance to add another trophy to your case as well. Each class champion gets a gold ball and two games later there is a crystal ball (or whatever) for the best team in TN. I other words it would be a tournament of champions.

  12. This means you are too young to remember DCA, FRA, and CPA of the 80’s and 90’s, you’re a transplant gone bad, or you’re an absolute idiot. My money is on all three.

  13. Hmmmm. Making $5 million per year on a 5 year contract, vs. making public school teaching salary plus coaching supplement on a year by year contract. Yeah, that's really a tough choice.

  14. I'm just gonna leave this here: stopping Tessa is not the only key to beating Stone. She is phenomenal. She is amazing. She is one of my favorite kids to ever have the good fortune to know- but just like last year when you thought Stone was a two woman team ( it wasn't,) it's not a one woman team this year. I don't know how this game will play out- honestly I don't. I know that Cookeville is athletic and scrappy and when they're on they are ON, so I'm not making a prediction. I am saying don't overlook the rest of the team. Scoring is still fairly balanced most nights.

  15. The TSSAA apparently changed that rule at some point. There were also a couple of kids from Lakeway Christian Academy that competed in-season at an event not as part of their team that got me to looking at the handbook again. Not going to go search through the handbook now but the gist of it was that they have removed the "all-star" event restriction from sports with an individual championship. There is even a FAQ that covers that exact scenario for golf and then mentions it would be the same for other sports and names wrestling. Certainly interesting to me because it seemed like that was the type of rule change that would have received a little more visibility in the past.

  16. The issue is that local administrators don't have the authority to make such promises and even if they do make them orally, they aren't binding. And in systems with multiple schools, administrators are moved often and chances are that an administrator who hires a coach isn't going to be there in 3-4 years down the road. Bottom line - they are teachers first. That's what they are hired to do. Coaching isn't the primary function of those folks. And a large, large, percentage of the coaches I know are in it for the right reasons first, to educate young folks. While a lot of things about high school sports has become more like college athletics, primarily because of the social media pressures, it's still high school. Unfortunately pressure on coaches to win championships at that level is way too great, IMO.

This is a message board. People are allowed to make comments. Whether you deem them worthy of mention or not is out of my control.

  21. He is worse than Botch Jones. Would have been better off sticking with Dooley rather than the parade of losers and punks (Kiffin) that have come through. UT football is a full on dumpster fire. Period. He should have been fired after losing to Ga State at home.

  22. How many high school coaches have constructed national championship level defenses at multiple schools? Mediocre SEC HC? Absolutely. But to act like the man is not a quality football coach is ludicrous. Some coaches are made to be coordinators and Pruitt is one of them. Also no one remembers him from Two-A-Days on MTB.

  23. Kaleb Baker also placed 2nd at Tulsa as well as an 8th grader, so likely 15U (I would have to go back and look). You could say he didn't make the finals since he lost in quarters or semi's (I can't remember which) to eventual champ and wrestled back to true 2nd. Always good to celebrate success, but hate to misrepresent the past with statements too broad. Was good to see the success of the BoomRanch / Higher Calling guys this weekend. Tulsa is a very tough event and certainly worth celebrating any level of success there. Interesting weekend for national tournaments with several very good teams / kids ending up in Gattlinburg for the NUWAY events. Hate to see those types of scheduling conflicts. For example, I know some very tough PA kids ended up in Gattlinburg.

  25. Thoughtful statement question Blazer. I’ve seen Boone in person 3 times over the last 5 years and 2 or 3 dozen times in person over the last 40 years. So here are my random thoughts. 1) it’s harder for a county program to get the resources they need as oppose to special designated school districts such as Maryville, Alcoa, Tullahoma, Greeneville, Oak Ridge, and Betsy. Most counties consist of multiple High Schools. 2) The Janeways, Charlie Coles, are ballers that everybody would love to have, but the Traditional powers have several of them. Betsy and the Devils have produced a ton of D1 prospects. 3) Depth..... it’s a major factor. 4) the little things...... such as splits. Boone has had traditionally huge linemen over the years but have used tight splits and have tried to pound the rock inside. Against the big boys it looks like a mass of humanity and 2 yards and a cloud of dust. Philosophy, we will run the blankety, blank ball against anybody. So everybody’ runs man on the corner and the safety becomes a mlb with a 10 yard run to slam his body into the Boone back. 5) Betsy and the Devils have middle school programs that if those staffs were in HS they would still be called excellent staffs. 6) community expectations. All the little boys run around in Devil Jerseys with their names on the back. Winning begets winning. There is also an alignment from little league through HS. What is your community’s identity? Greeneville’s is the school system, AAA ACADEMICS, the ARTS and ATHLETICS. 7) The weight room and guess what.... Multi Sport athletes that win big in other sports. Basketball, wrestling, soccer, track and baseball. The bar bell is an inanimate object and doesn’t push back. This is your Greene Devils. You don’t have 280 lb stiff legged kids that bench 300. You have big agile athletes that bench 360. 8) Good kids want to play for winning teams. I’m a baller, we move to Fall Branch. I drive up I81. Do I turn left to big DB or right to little db. I TURN LEFT. Everybody calls it recruiting and it is...... caused by winning, facilities, coaching staffs, recruitment by universities and in many cases believe it or not, ACT and fine arts programs. Blazer these are just observations and opinions by someone that has journeyed a long time.

  26. They would have to give him the same 120 day contract situation. He can't draw retirement and be full time. Also, he would not come back to RuCo because he would not have the control to bring in all the athletes like he does now and did when he was at Riverdale. He has never exactly "looked for a challenge". He left RuCo when his special zoning ceased to exist. Creasy controls Murfreesboro now.
