  1. Congrats !! to the Rebels on another run to the Gold !! Because of retirement I missed getting to lead the buses to the big game. It was hard to watch on TV and not be on the sideline watching these fine young men working hard and celebrating the rewards of that work. Congrats also to Derek and the rest of the staff, they haven't missed a beat since George left. The players, coaches, administration, school, community, and fans have shown that Maryville is the best place to live and I am proud to call it home.

  2. So happy for our boys but even happier for DH & Co. The highlight of last night was seeing his boys celebrate with him. Very moving moment. So proud of them ALL

  3. Thank you! I hope to make a few games next year on weekends we don't have to travel far. Blessed to be able to watch him play another four years! Four of his coaches came last night, including Will Healy. They are excited for him to be a GOV. Any time you want to road-trip to Clarksville with us, you're more than welcome!

  4. Cane Ridge was a class act. And their band was AWESOME!!! The love for and from Derek is amazing. He loves each of those boys as if they were his own. Some of these boys don't have a positive male role model in their lives and this coaching staff gives them a little of that. I am so thankful for the 11 years of Maryville football that my son has been a part of. This community, the schools and fan base are TOP NOTCH. I will miss it all next year!

  7. I was blown away at how Classy Cane Ridge was , and after watching the game on TIVO today it was even more impressive hearing the Cane Ridge Players hollering their Congrats and Admiration to the Maryville Players . Also , Cane Ridge's Band put on an Awesome show at Halftime , and One of Their Band Members came over to Maryville's Student section and got the entire Maryville Student section involved in the Show !! That was AWESOME to see the Students from both sections having an absolute BALL Together !! I'm a Total Cane Ridge and Coach Woods fan now and I'll be pulling for them from now on in every game ... unless we play again of course , if we do play again , it will be awesome I'm sure !

  8. We have a weight room at Scotts Hill...I wasn't being defensive because my team lost (not my team), just letting you know what I think of people who bad mouth kids. Springfield's players wanted that championship just as badly as your kids, and worked hard to get where they were...no need for some small minded moron to heap on their disappointment by calling them "trash"...what a jerk!

  11. There was plenty of talent in previous years under other staff with difference being that Coach Ryan will play whoever he feels he needs to get the job done. He gets personal with the kids but does not let that dictate personnel as much as previous coaches have done. If you are a Freshman or Sophomore and better than an upperclassmen you typically will get the chance. As it should be. This ain't a game where you take a number and wait in line. You know Seniors first, then Juniors, then....get the picture. Personal friendships and off field relationships should have no place in coaching a team. That stuff has to be separate and is just the most respected way to do things and only fair to the whole team. Could have had a Gold ball already if things were done right especially in 2013 & 2014 & probably 2012.

  12. A silver ball after only being a program for what, three years?? HUGE accomplishment!

  13. Just a footnote to the game. I watched the TV broadcast on DVR last night. When the linebacker intercepted Covington (first int) they said his name was Warwick. Later in the broadcast, they said that his grandfather played in the NFL. That's when I realized that I know his grandfather ( at least know of him). When I was a student at TTU, we had an All everything linebacker called Big Sam. His real name was Lonnie Warwick. He went on to play middle linebacker for the Minnesota Vikings for a number of years. I remember that we Tech grads were really proud to see a Tech guy doing so well on a national stage. i just wanted to shout out to the Alcoa player about how great his grandad was in the day.

  14. Great game last night by Maryville. Y'all didn't miss a beat this year and took care of business as usual. For all those saying the state championship was last week or that Whitehaven beat themselves or whatever, no. Give CR credit. They beat Whitehaven the defending state champions. They earned a spot in the state championship against the rebels. They didn't play very well but a lot of teams that play in their first state championship or against Maryville look like CR did last night. Great season CR.

  16. Just my opinion, but I believe Greenville could beat, Beech and KC, the KC would be a good game though, and although I think KC has better athletes to an extent, Greeneville is just so much more efficient offensively, I thought Ballard's 82% was misleading due to pop passese, screens, ect ect, but that's wrong, his ball placement was on point regardless of range/distance, besides being a die hard Springfield fan, I am a huge football football fan in general and you just have to appreciate that level of effeciency/ability. I do believe teams such as Maryville and Oakland would be too much for them, but outside of that, they have a shot against anybody in TN.....

  17. Sorry if your big boy’s feelings got hurt. I guess you’ll pitch a fit when he’s on the road in the SEC and the opposing student section says mean stuff. But it’s much more a reflection of the “class” of a program how the players conduct themselves on the field than what a few non athletes say in the bleachers.

  18. Congrats to Cain Ridge on a great season and representing your school with high dignity and honor. Congrats to Maryville for playing the hardest schedule maybe in school history and winning the state. Congrats to Derek Hunt for doing a great job under a pressure packed situation he came into following one of the all time great head coaches in high school football history. As always we'll miss another great group of seniors that may be gone but never forgotten.

  19. And even the 2A game came down to Double OT. So folks out West, I didn't see any "wiping up the field" or "Mercy Clock" on the East. Guess we are just a little tougher than you thought. See YOU next year.

  21. Your team had a great season and believe me,there are a lot of schools that will never make it to the championship game in our lifetimes.I've watched as a parent when sports ended for my sons and I always have a special place in my heart for all those young men that are going through the pain of playing their last game.Another reason I know how to take a win but more so,how it feels for those thousands that always come up short.Best of luck to all of your seniors and once again, congratulations on a super year ,Springfield .

  23. Great season for Springfield. What I've seen is a good group of kids and coaches, with a lot of community support. In no way should they hang their heads. The loss tonight will be tough, but I hope tomorrow they can realize what they did accomplish. In regards to being the best team in the state, have you seen the talent level of the top 6A teams in the state? Maryville and Oakland are light years ahead. That's in no way disrespecting Greeneville. As I said, they have a great team and solid program. A lot of people may not want to hear it, but there's a huge difference in the top of 4A and the top of 6A.

  24. Got to say... had my worries about changing coaching staffs. Had faith in Derek, but he faced an extremely hard schedule and he followed a legend that is one of the top high school coaches in history. That's a tough task and he made all of us extremely proud. Mad props to Mr. Hunt.

  25. Congrats on the Championship. Complete game by a complete team. I am still proud of out Jackets. We had a successful season even with this loss. Now we need to build on this and improve

  27. they did show class and sportsmanship, a testament to their coaches and school leaders no doubt, but it's a shame when people are praised for doing the right thing IMHO.

  28. I will agree with you on that statement. To see them accept their runner up trophy showed a lot of class. Most teams in the past acted classless when the presentation was made. On TV it was very nice to see their players express their gratitude to have a silver ball!!! Congrats to Cane Ridge on a great season

  29. I don't think there's a comeback in the cards for CR. Congratulations to Maryville. Your program sets the standard we all hope to achieve.

  30. I think having too many classifications is a big part of the problem. 9 gold balls is about 3 too many IMO... Maryville looks awesome tonight.

  31. Maryville - Oakland was the state championship for sure. This is a huge mismatch! Is Whitehaven down this year?

  32. Hopefully Maryville will dominate the rest of the game like they already have so that East TN will win all 5 games they were in

  33. Two defensive TD’s in first half for Rebels so far, 28-0 in 2nd quarter, pretty much a flawless performance by Maryville so far.

  34. Congrats to Greeneville, you guys have a great team, definitely the best offense in Cookeville, our coaches did their best game planning for this game, you guys just do so many things well, very diffcult to defend..... With that said I am very proud of our Yellow Jackets, I knew they were destined to make some appearances in Cookeville in the future, it just came earlier than we expected, this program is on the right track and I am very proud of these guys, now we have a silver ball to go with our gold one, great season guys!

  36. Congrats to Greenville on your State Championship!! Waiting to watch the 6A game, but so far Greenville has been head and shoulders above any team in Cookeville. Even the private. Have to wait until tomorrow night to form opinion on overall, but once again ....Congratulations.

  37. Maybe so but that's how the ball bounces. Springfield won the games that were in front of them to get to the championship. They didn't play well at all, not taking anything away from Greeneville....they are probably the best public school team in the state in any classification in my mind. Crongrats Greeneville on the gold ball!

  38. Been a heckova day. $75 mil guaranteed for Jimbo Fisher. $75M! Fulmer in as AD on the Hill. He was the first Ive seen over there in a while that didn't look like a deer in the headlights...I've never heard of Cane Ridge. With a 2000 yard rusher and the teams they have beaten, they must be really good. And they are the underdog - look out and keep up with the turnover count. Good luck to the young ball coach and his team tonight. They have really improved during the course of the year. Regardless of the final score, this team has some great wins and has created some lifelong memories. MURVIL IS THE WINNING TEAM! CR IS THE LOSING TEAM! THESE ARE THE BEST REFEREES? 38-35 IS THE SCOREBOARD! Congrats to both teams on great seasons. Safe travels for everybody...$75 MILLION GUARANTEED - WOW!

  39. Very proud Devil up here in Kingsport.Thank you to all the coaches and players for your hard work. Thanks to all the folks at GHS and around Greeneville that help support our team.Maybe most importantly is thank you to all the parents who have raised a great group of young champions.Without you and the many hours of helping your sons,we wouldn't be celebrating.YES !! Champions again !!

  40. We are still here DevilMan. I have been very impressed with y'alls team, your O way more so than your D. I know we've only scored 7, but we had a couple of chances to score early in the game and "shot ourselves in the foot" and were able to run a little more than I expected us to be able to. Great job Greeneville and Congratulations.

  42. Game Day. Safe travels to all. I am looking forward to a well played and injury free game. To all the seniors a word of advise...... enjoy this game there is a odd feeling when you pull that jersey over your head for the last time. Good luck to our opponent, may the best win. To the victor goes the spoils and I am guessing the smack talk

  43. Both of these teams have more experience in the playoffs over last 3-4 years than any other football teams in this State so is unlikely any of the players are going to be overly nervous for this game. There is no reasonably informed person who has watched a fair amount of HS football in TN who would not objectively judge BA to be hands down the best team in the State. While national rankings probably are impossible in terms of differentiating a team in TN from a Team in FL or OH, etc. so one can decide who is 4th vs. 7th it is clear that somebody is watching film of all these teams from all over and putting BA in the national conversation for a reason. MBA got destroyed by BA during the regular season (game was over in the 1st Qtr) and there was as clear of an "athletic mismatch" as everyone has alluded to. The difference between this BA team and the BA teams of the last couple of years is that they have an excellent and disciplined defense. While they do not have the QB who seemed to always make plays for them in key situations, this year they have a very balanced offense that does not make mistakes and looks like the NE Patriots in terms of efficiency but their best player is actually the RB who does not get near the credit he should. MBA has nothing but a bunch of very solid HS football players who are extremely well coached and collectively they have to found a way to beat teams that across all of D2 have many more athletes, and a bunch of commits "sportswriters" like to talk about, etc. In the playoffs MBA has allowed less points per game than any other team in the playoffs in any class but they have also scored the less per game. These are VERY different football teams but they both have been battle tested all year because teams like McCallie, Baylor, Ensworth, CBHS are VERY good football teams that while they have weaknesses like all HS teams (except for maybe BA) they give their competition a real fight. Easy to pick BA like all the "experts" have. The analysis leads one to conclude that MBA will have a very hard time moving the ball and scoring against BA, as every team has had a hard time doing, and also that BA will move up and down the field. I think that that is likely to happen at the beginning of game. If it happens past the first quarter than the game will probably end up being the "sure thing" everyone thinks it will be. If, however it is a tie, or a one touchdown game after one quarter I believe it will be a lot closer than every one might imagine. These are teeanage boys and a lot can happen in the course of a 48 minute football game. There is a very solid chance that the 23 people that drive to Cookeville to watch this game (lol) will see a good close game and there is an 100% chance that they will see all the players on both sides playing their guts out until the last whistle. There are no "sure things" in high school sports so maybe it will be worth the drive and the $12 ticket
