  1. Alcoa school board members question perceived emphasis on athletics · By Amy Beth Miller amy.miller@thedailytimes.com Some Alcoa school board members are questioning whether the high school is emphasizing athletics over academics, citing the admission of a nonresident student previously suspended in Maryville and the hiring of another student-athlete’s father. The issue was in the spotlight during the Board of Education’s work session Monday, prompted by the hiring of a special education teacher who isn’t yet certified for the position but whose son plays football and basketball... This is an EXCERPT. 2. You are very safe as long as no ugh....cough..cough.......'Ladies' show up on my front lawn............ for some reason the wife takes a dim view of them showing up.........it stems from my days in Vice and Narcotics......... Two showed up with the intention of making me the LATE Detective Skidmore. I have never hidden my name or address. That is why I taught her to shoot early in our marriage. She first learned on my Model 70 1911 Colt IPSC competition gun. She learned so well she turned IPSC Pro and took it as her own. When I bought ME the stainless Kimber she saw it..............and bye..bye Kimber! If things get REAL stupid she has an Romanian AK pistol with a 100 round Chinese drum loaded with armor piercing........... She cooks and sews and tends the garden and cans the veggies........... Can you tell I not only Love her, I am PROUD of her. I am a lucky man.... She also does NOT mind me buying all the guns I want! Now hows that for a KEEPER!

  3. Hiring a teacher without certification? Heck I’ll leave the lunch room and start teaching this school year and maybe Stars could get hired teaching English

  4. There are a lot of good schools in the area but GB environment is a tad bit different. The PreK-12 experience is different and for those that have transferred in over the years they enjoy what that environment entails. Instant fans from the preK to MS kids. They are like the paparazzi in the halls and commons areas of the gym, cafeteria, library, front office, etc. The little boys wear their GB game jerseys on game day & the little girls are decked in orange & black with bows and glitter. There are photo ops and high 5s running rampant! The high schoolers are teaching assistants and help the younger grades. They see one of these littles upset in the hall or in the office and they come to the rescue offering assistance. This experience of having the responsibility of setting a good example knowing little eyes and ears are on you throughout the day really helps mature a teenager especially when they realize the impact they can have on those they have come to love and care for. They are like future Dads in training. I really think it curbs the culture of teenagers being teenagers doing dumb teenager things and being cool, aloof, & making bad decisions. Not easy explaining to a group of 5 or 6 year old fans that idolize you why you got suspended and aren’t playing on Friday you know. The new guys come in and just follow suit and it is an addictive culture. Word gets around about the special experience at Greenback and we’ve produced some pretty successful young adults ready for the transition to college or the workplace. I’ve been told and experienced that last Senior walk and final bus ride to the “Senior Lake Day” with the sidewalks lined full of young ones is a right of passage and bittersweet. Emotional for the waving kids and really pulls the heartstrings of those moving on and leaving their school family. Some might say what in the world does this have to do with football lol? My response is EVERYTHING!

  6. You are making it sound like he came from Burger King or Something . He has been teaching for 8 years just doesn't have a special education certificate per the article. This happens a lot when it comes to teacher getting a different certification to teach a different subject and nothing out of the norm all over the state of TN

  7. Sounds like someone with an axe to grind. Sounds like it wasn't an issue at all until someone made it an issue by opening his mouth. No news here. Surprised it was even in the paper. You cant make everyone happy and some will never be happy.

  10. Alcoa’s state academic report card and test scores are great. Athletic program is flourishing. What do the two board members want?? They are knocking it out of the park in both areas. This seems silly to me.

  11. Basically its if little Johnny isn't good enough to start at Maryville and the other schools, parents move to do what they can so little Johnny can play full time. Not share a position.

  12. Always somebody setting on the Hotseat so let's see who that may be. Mr. Linginfelter ,Mr. Mozingo and Mr. Brown would be my first choices since those respected schools have won state titles in recent years to be in the situation their in right now. Mr. Mckamey can't afford anymore outburst like the Anderson County game or he'll be on the seat also. Other coaches that may be in the steam room with a broken thermostat are Mr. Sanders, Mr. Bradley and possibly Mr. Christian. Mr. Hammontree and Mr. Shadowens have no worries about the hot seat because the County Mayor is a retired fireman and had their seats sprayed with a fire retardant material. Barney wishes all these coaches only the best and hopes none of them get burned. .

  13. That’s great! Many small town schools across the state have those very same proud traditions. These schools have little wide eyed kids that look forward to growing up and fighting for the pride of THEIR hometowns. It must stink for a kid who has worked hard and put themselves into a position for a starting position, only to have a big time recruit roll into town as a senior. Year after year after year. New Tradition? Hey, at least they have a great chance for a ring. If not, there is always “Senior Lake Day”.

  14. I beg to differ. This Greenback team is a different animal than you’ve seen before. We will beat South Pitt by 5 touchdowns or more. Nothing against SP, we’re just on a different level. We have a QB that started at Maryville.

  15. Get outta here wish your fake account. And the trash talk. I wonder if this is the same guy from Coalfield from a couple of years ago.

  16. 100% agree brother. The better question may be what or who would motivate someone to complain about academic and athletic success that is done completely by the rules?

  17. It was Grilled Honey Buns with Ice Cream from the Drug Store, but i've heard rumors of this new mayor has something in the works and considering a "Recruit Tax" on the city. The county commission was considering a package but it looks like the new jail house will take all that $$$ we'll see what happens

  18. As has been said over and over on CoachT individual players does not a team make. People seem to be dismissing the fact that GB graduated 16 seniors, most of whom were starters and picking up a few good players will not replace that. There is certainly potential but they must stay healthy and come together as a team to be successful. Right now I think they're a top 5 team but until they put on the pads and get a couple scrimmages under their belt there's really no telling how they will gel. South Pitt is obviously the preseason team to beat out of the east, NO question!

  21. Maybe you and the Coalfield guy can get a room and console each other! Then invite the 68 guy from Lake County over to wipe the tears. My goodness what a bunch of sissies!Rackum is the only one with a set,he sounds like he might have actually been in a ballgame before. This why I don't get on here much anymore. If anyone of these kids showed up in the Admins office at any one of you alls school you all would be tickled.

  22. I dont doubt it. Our game last year was one of the most exciting games I've seen to date was a close, hard fought game and wasn't sure who was gonna win until time ran out. Those are the games I love to see. And i agree also that our offense vs your defense was nearly perfectly matched. Wish we could pulled it out but you got us by 3. Well respected effort on both sides.

  23. We won both of our spring scrimmages by a total of 103-14. We should be very competitive in the district.

  26. More than questionable this is the reason I could never root for Greenback. They are the new private in public schools, but just like all the privates always said “ we are not recruiting players “.

  29. Have you had a PI sneaking around? Trust me, I know the feeling... Play ball and may the best team win! You know how the saying goes, “On any given day, any team can win!” No guarantee that transfers guarantee wins!

  30. The kids main interest is the same today as it was 50 years ago. Finding an opportunity and person to swap spit with! Football is just a reason to be at the same place to do it, but with concessions.

  31. I think you are dead on with the community high school gets more support statement. You go to small towns across the state and the stands will still usually be full especially if there is a good team at the local high school. I went to the York/Oneida game in Jamestown the year before last (I graduated from York over 30 years ago and hadn't been to a game in 20 years) and it was like stepping back in time. It was almost the same as when I played. It was a pleasant surprise. I started going again because I had quit watching the NFL over the national anthem issues.
