  4. They won by 24 points. Not bad for a team that struggled.

  6. Pure speculation but my guess is the name being rumored might be Pierson due to him living in summer county closer to Westmoreland than hartsville, don’t think Davy is going anywhere, we may get another one or two in, if Pitts comes he will be OC, I expect Blake to name Dyer DC but it will still have his touch on it and Blake will focus more 50/50 on offense.

  8. Auston Sweeney is the only returning placer at this weight. And holds a win this year over my 145 lb state champ Alex Pergande. All signs seem to point towards a smooth path to title number 2. However, a path that likely runs through a Lemons brother and 2 studs from Johnson City OR a very dangerous Blaze named Brown...I’m not quite sold on it.. But he has been dominant this year and you know the Raiders in Blue are always at their best this time of year. Hmmmmmm...let’s toss a wrench shall we Cleveland fans lose their minds in 3.....2.....1 Final Picks: 1. Logan Ferguson (Tennessee) 2. Jared Harter (Science Hill) 3. Auston Sweeney (Cleveland) 4. Cainon Elkins (Halls) 5. Jalen Brown (Blackman) 6. Jeremiah Herron (Beech) One match away: Owen Medrano (Northeast), Trenton McCrary (Overton)

  12. Loretta has always had a history of having good teams. I will say this. If she is better than Chloe Moore as a freshman, she is good. But Moore would get my vote alone on what she did in Murfreesboro last year and I think most people will vote for her because they will judge her the way she handled her team last year. IMO a Miss Basketball is how she plays on the big stage. The kid at Loretta I have heard is a player for sure but she is a freshman and I imagine many people will vote without seeing her play.

  15. I’m going to put out Picks for each weight with their own thread so each weight gets its own discussion. We will start at 106. I think everyone is in agreement that this is McDaniel’s championship to lose. With only a couple viable challengers, it’s hard to imagine Trae not being on top of the podium next weekend. I think 1-3 are locks. 4-6 however gets tricky. Lots of good talented kids fighting for those spots. Final Picks: 1. Trae McDaniel (Cleveland) 2. Chris Calvin (McGavock) 3. Brayden Ivy (Motown West) 4. Ethan Wilson (Bradley) 5. Tyler South (Stewart’s Creek) 6. Keegan Schulz (Munford) One match away: Grapperhaus (Sevier) Stokes (Oakland)

  24. Getting rid of 3 and 4 seeds is very unfair some districts only have 4 or 5 teams while others have 8 or 9 even 10! Some Regionals are mismatches and 3 & 4 seeds regularly win. It used to not be this way either distric tournaments were over by Saturday of this week the Regional Tournament began on Monday with 4 1v4 games then Tuesday was 2v3 Wednesday was the semifinals and Finals were on Thursday Girls Sub-State on Saturday and Boys on Monday with the Girls State starting on Wednesday. Boys on Wednesday of the next week. 3 weeks for Girls and 4 for Boys.

  25. Chloe Moore is a Miss Basketball winner IMO. She actually won it last year showing everyone how good she was in the state. Butler showed out for GC going 70-1 and two Gold Balls and not winning it. Whoever wins it doesn't mean they are the best player that is for sure.

  26. Oh and btw everybody, this back and forth abt the miss basketball is gettin kinda dumb...... I can honestly say I know nothing abt the young lady from TCA but as a Summertown dad. 1) Chloe Moore is an absolute stud. Totally took over the 2nd half of last yrs state championship against us and is well deserved if she wins it. 2) Karly Weathers may be the best player in TN (all classes) shes not averaging her pts on 30 attempts. It's usually like 10-14 from the fld and makes everyone around her better. Whoever wins it, it'll be deserved!

  27. With ban lifted, Wooddale's Chandler Lawson can focus on chasing state title No. 4 Khari Thompson, Memphis Commercial AppealPublished 1:46 p.m. CT Feb. 12, 2019 | Updated 1:50 p.m. CT Feb. 12, 2019 The remainder of Chandler Lawson's senior season was nearly snatched away from him in the waning moments of a double-digit victory. What started as two players throwing the ball at each other escalated into a fight that left both teams with two-year postseason bans. But after Shelby County Schools appealed the ruling, TSSAA lifted Wooddale's ban on Friday, clearing the Cardinals to play in the postseason. "I knew we were going to get it because we didn’t fight," Lawson said. "The crowd got into it, and we just prayed on it and knew that God had our back." Chandler Lawson, shown with his AAU team Bluff City Legends, is trying to win his fourth consecutive state title. (Photo: Mark Weber/The Commercial Appeal) Securing a special meeting was the most worrisome part for Lawson's father, Wooddale coach Keelon Lawson. He was confident that he had done all he could to keep his players out of the melee. "We know what we did trying to keep our players from running off the bench, so I just talked to them (the players) and told them that whatever judgment they (TSSAA) came back with, we have to bear witness," Keelon said. Wooddale coaches corralled their players when the fight broke out, pulling them into the cafeteria at Melrose, site of the game. That kept them away from everything happening on the court. Wooddale (24-3) was the only one of three Shelby County Schools banned from the postseason for fighting on Jan. 25 to get its ban removed. Fairley, a GreenDot school, will have a special-called Board of Control meeting on Wednesday to appeal its postseason suspension. "We were in the locker room just waiting, and it was either going to be good news or bad news, and we were just going to deal with it, and it was good news," Chandler said. The Cardinals are still on probation for the next two years. A $3,500 fine placed on the program was reduced to $1,500. But for now they're focused on making the most of their newly regained eligibility. “It’s a blessing to get another chance to play basketball again. I thought my season would’ve been over, but God made a blessing," Chandler said. Now the 6-foot-8 Oregon signee can focus on chasing a fourth state title. He won three consecutive state championships playing for Penny Hardaway at East before transferring to Oak Hill, a prep basketball powerhouse in Virginia. He returned to Memphis to play for his dad after he was named Wooddale's coach. Chandler was more of a role player on those teams, but now he has the opportunity to win a title at Wooddale as the go-to option. "The past three years, he's just been part of the supporting cast, and now this is his team," Keelon said. "I don’t need you to be the supporting cast. I need you to come out and lead the way. I think he’s doing a great job."

  29. That is correct. The first playoff game I saw was 1983 in the old Astrodome. I could be wrong but I think Houston Yates was one of the teams and possibly Odessa Permian was the opponent. I think attendance was in the 40,000 range and it was not for the state championship. We had been at Rice for 1 week and had been on the road recruiting and we all got back in town on Friday afternoon and went to the game. Paid our own way so it was legal. I remember watching film at Richardson HS in Dallas. The coach was Winston Duke and he advised me to buy some boots. I wore a pair the next week when I visited! I didn't know UIL played by college rules at that time so it was different watching a HS game played by college rules. Recruited Texas for 7 years, Metroplex and west Texas. Apples and oranges when comparing Tennessee to Texas is an understatement.

  32. Chill ... is that "official"? Or just your thoughts? A pretty good list. One of my favorite players in the distict hit 1,000 points last night -- Jordan Tarver, WB. Not in top five in district, but I think he would have to be considered in Top 10. He's a stat sheet kid and I have loved watching him play.

  34. My understanding is Coach Rankin was Coach Wheeler's biggest supporter when he was going after this job. When I interviewed him following their win in Cookeville, his first comments were to compliment Marty and his staff on an excellent game plan. When you have the respect of a peer like Gary Rankin, it doesn't get anymore impressive than that.

  35. Been a friend of Coach Wheelers for awhile. He's a regular on our show and very entertaining. Great personality and the kids love him. Better than that, he knows how to assemble a staff and he's one heck of a Coach! To the guy with the remarks about not winning a title...……. He would of won the last two if he wasn't in the same class as Alcoa! How many "champions" over the last two years would of beaten that Alcoa squad? (in any class)
