  1. Great team and great program, Greeneville. You all surely deserved this championship. For us, it's a shame our best team in a long time happened at the same time that Greeneville was on another level from any other 4A team. Your team and program have my great respect. I am excited to see what young Mr. Ballard can accomplish at West Point.

  2. Coaches are well aware of the fact that, no matter how much you win, people will always gripe about whatever you're doing, especially if you're doing something that's "unfashionable." There are legendary coaches in other states who win state titles regularly who have been run off for running veer, Wing-T, single wing, or even the I formation. Meanwhile, a lot of fans just want to see the ball in the air. If a coach runs the Wing-T and goes 3-7 for a couple of years in a row, that coach will likely be fired. If he finishes 3-7 throwing the ball around, they'll probably keep him around for a while. Two of the most dominant HS programs in the nation , De La Salle in CA and Bellevue in Washington, are old fashioned Split Back Veer and Wing-T offenses, respectively, and they roll over everybody like they're made out of tissue paper... but that doesn't stop people in the peanut gallery from griping that they're not running a more "modern" offense and demanding changes. Same goes for other top national HS programs like Smith Center in Kansas (who ran a unique wishbone until a few years ago), Apopka in FL (single wing and is the Maryville of Florida, basically), and JT Curtis in LA (who are also veer). Don Markham, the inventor of the Double Wing offense, was one of the most successful HS coaches of all time, with a ton of amazing turnarounds and national records at multiple schools in multiple states--I mean the guy made a career out of taking over perennial doormats who were 1-9 or 0-10 and going undefeated with a gold ball and state or national scoring records in his first year on the job... but he never stayed at any HS for longer than 3-4 years because of all the griping about how the offense wasn't good enough. You see this on the college level, too. Years ago, Nebraska got tired of winning only 10-11 games a year running that "outdated" option offense, so they fired their coach and brought in a succession of pro-style and spread coaches to throw the ball to mediocrity. A lot of HS coaches have realized that they can still get away with running an old fashioned offense if they can figure out a way to make it work from the shotgun so it looks "modern." Go under center, and the Wing-T, I formation, or triple option is outdated. Back the QB up 4 yards with a bubble screen every now and then and all of a sudden you're a genius. It really is that simple... if they can make it work. Heck, I've talked to coaches in other states who run the Single Wing and get away with it by calling it "Power Shotgun." Give me success over style points, any day. No matter how you score, a TD is still only worth 6 points. Honestly, I think a lot of the truly terrible teams out there trying to run spread offenses would be a lot better off going under center and grinding it out so they at least kill some clock, stop turning the ball over, and don't get humiliated 50-7 every week. Also, with everyone trying to run "the spread" now, being that one team on the schedule who does something different and punches you in the mouth on every play can be a huge advantage.

  3. Wow what a great game. First off I want to say congratulations to Haywood County on their great season. Man that was some BIG Boy's there is definitely kid's on that team that will be playing on Saturdays. #91 was as advertised very good football player. #2 was a great runner extremely fast and deceptively strong . Very impressed with Haywood County. After watching all 15 game's that greeneville played this year. I do believe Haywood was the best team we played all year. And as far as my GREENE DEVIL'S go wow what I can I say we got punched right in the mouth at the beginning of the game and never even flinched. Such poise and determination. And this team's will to win is something else. I thought the o line played a great ball game. And the backs ran hard. And of course Cade did his thing. Really going to miss watching these senior's play what a special Group. It really makes this old Devil feel good to see the team playing together and playing for each other the way they do. What a wonderful season. So proud of each and every one of you guys. Now to the under classman. Take off the rest of the weekend and then it's weight room Monday LoL. Got to get ready for a shot at that 3 peat. But once again much respect to Haywood County they deserve or respect they have a great football team

  5. Great analysis, If Cville stops Whitwell they win, if Whitwell stops Cville they win. I bet you got a shot to be on College Game Day when Corso finally retires.

  6. Gotcha. I think the majority of the people that watched y’all play yesterday will know that y’all are nothing to mess with.

  8. Reading some of this stuff about Oakland having a terrible wingT offense and not being near as good as teams from other States is comical. Of course Whitehaven was criticized 2 years ago and Maryville has taken lots of criticism. Who cares about other States? Oakland is your 6A Champions. I respect Oakland a lot. Even though they are now a rival to Maryville. I think Oakland is a classy program. When Oakland and Maryville play each other there is respect shown. I don't care what offense Oakland runs. I have seen them run wingT but also spread you out. Their offense is good enough. Oakland wins with defense. What they did to Maryville and Whitehaven is very impressive. Congratulations to Oakland on a state title.

  9. Well considering D2 doesn't play the week before, they should ALWAYS be the Thursday games.

  10. If they played perfect against y’all a couple of weeks ago then I like our chances. Y’all gave that game away

  11. Oakland fan here.............I watched them play before us last night and they are more than IN the conversation! Great team! As an outsider, I saw what our Oakland team this season has in Greenville's players. They seem to truly care for the guys beside them. Most definitely our biggest asset! Congrats on the gold ball!!

  12. Someone may have mentioned this already (I haven't had time to read all the pages after the game), but this game was won in two phases. Strength & conditioning and coaching! Haywood just wore out in the second half. I give credit to the weight room and offseason conditioning programs Greeneville has. Secondly, Greeneville adjusted well. #92 was a beast at fullback!!!! But everything went behind him. If they countered, he came across the line. If the ran a sweep, he went to the outside. If the ran a dive, he was busting up the middle. I get it! Many of a coach will line up and say, here's what I'm running, it's your job to stop it. But if I can figure it out from the stands, Greeneville's coaches will definitely figure it out. Heck, the first time Haywood was forced to punt, #92 was resting n the bench that series. He was a monster! All in all congrats to the Greene Devils! Four in nine years is pretty amazing feat. Also congrats to Haywood on a great season. You gave Greeneville their toughest challenge, especially for a half. (Yes, even more than AC, haha, I couldn't resist. I just hate the season is over.

  15. You sir, are clueless! Regardless of what offense was being run by Oakland, it mattered not. That defense was incredible. If you have no insight and could not recognize how good that team was, dont keep embarrassing yourself with stupid posts..

  16. Congrats to Oakland - totally dominant. “Boring” offense compliments an incredible defense. That offense completely controlled the ball and wore the WH defense down. It may not be sexy, but it’s extremely effective. I loved WH band. Maybe shouldn’t have played during play, but the drum line was awesome and horn section rocked. Dancers looked great too.

  17. Oakland ran primarily out of the I, but threw in some shotgun/wildcat. They had 3 guys that could be a feature back that year

  18. This is perhaps the best representation of what this program is all about. Thanks to Tim Hayes of the Bristol Herald Courier https://www.heraldcourier.com/sports/net-juggernaut-greeneville-achieving-historic-success/article_2a89e96e-f375-11e8-bb82-c7a4c50374ad.html

  19. What if you run an old Wing-T offense but it takes you to the state title game? What if you only throw a couple of passes per game but you have a Gold Ball in your trophy case? What if you just do not look like (i.e., line up like) an NFL team but you still romp your high school opponents? Many questions, few answers.... Or maybe not?? You guys tell me...

  20. Can't wait to watch this one, hope the snowball don't happen to either. Games can be very misleading .2 even matched teams can turn into a blowout.

  21. Just my opinion but I think Whitwell has already beat 3 teams better than Cornersville. I do think they need the QB healthy.

  22. What's ego got to do with it? Read what you said. Whoever stops the other wins. What kind of prediction is that?

  23. My prediction. If Cornersville slows Petty down and keeps Wingo in check, they win. If Whitwell is effective running the ball and doesn’t let Whitaker or Woodard get out in the open, I believe they win. If both teams were returning from a state championship appearance, I’d pick Whitwell by 14 but I’m gonna say it’ll be closer just because of Cville’s experience. WHS by 3..... AGAIN.

  26. All of the above mentioned will be good next year. Don't overlook Oliver springs. They will be decent and could make waves in region 2. The offensive line is mostly all gone but most athletes from this year return for 2019. Region 2 should be fun.

  28. I think the Trousdale posts were leading everyone to believe that both your key players were injured coming into this game. I know when #8 got hurt. It's when he got trucked by Baugus & he ran it in for a TD. Those Peabody fans tried to tell you Trousdale would get "Baugused". Not taking anything away from those players at all. They played hard. I still think Peabody would have won by 2 TD's had they not hurt themselves with dumb penalties. Not characteristic of them at all. We had a great run at Dresden in 2016 but I don't for see it happening again any time soon. Congrats to all the teams that made it to the State Championship.

  29. I think that coaches are also concerned about getting players. I think more players are going to want to go to a school that runs a more contemporary offense that the players feel will give them the opportunity to build their own stats. We are unfortunately in a time in which individual stats seem to be more important than team stats. I know that wining championships will also attract players to your program, but I do think there is some pressure to keep up with the latest trends in order to attract the best players.

  30. Because that's mostly just what coaches know now and it's what parents, boosters, ADs, and kids expect, so that's who gets the head coach jobs. Anything else is looked down upon as "youth offense." The really bad schools always think that they don't have the talent up front to win, or they think they need to run some flashy offense to get athletes out, they wind up just making things worse. Another problem is if coaches know spread and pro-style stuff... those offenses have a certain set of answers, techniques, and drills they need to do in practice to teach that stuff and it takes a few years to really learn that inside and out. Those little details are the difference between 4 wins a year vs. 8+. If coaches want to "run what fits our talent this year," all that stuff goes out the window and they start from scratch every year. If you're radically changing every year... you're going to only be mediocre unless you just catch lightning in a bottle with a stud or two who simply need to be turned loose. Not many kids like that in NET. I'm old enough to remember when Mike Nelson and Stacey Carter first brought "the spread" on the scene in NET, first at Sullivan East and then to Sullivan South and Science Hill. They absolutely torched people at first with Sullivan East's talent because Carter knew how to coach QBs better than other coaches in NET, plus NET defenses really had no clue how to defend it. Now... that's what everyone does. I think Chuckey Doak runs Wing-T. They used to suck, but after they started running the Wing-T a few years ago they became decently competitive. Sullivan North was godawful for a while, but then Robbie Norris took over and installed the Double Wing and they started making deep playoff runs again with it.

  32. MTSU was 50 times better for too many reasons to count. I agree with you!

  33. I'd be fine if they kept the gate for the championships because they go through the trouble of actually putting those games on. They have no business taking half the gate throughout the playoffs of games they don't provide anything for.

  34. Very tough game. If we happen to lose I predict it's because a special team breakdown. If we can keep that from happening... Whitwell "Tigers" 21 Cornersville "Bulldogs" 12 Good luck to all and drive safely. Hope there are no serious injuries. Cornersville you love and support your kids..I love that! Whitwell does too!!

  37. You’re right, we did lose to TC and was sitting at home.. You are also right, both teams made each other bad! Now I am right when I say your fan base are obnoxious pr***! You guys are acting like you had your way with TC and that didn’t happen! I’ve been reading all your posters talk about how unrealistic TC fans are ( I agree) but you guys are just like them.. You won the Gold Ball, but by no means did you stomp TC.. Quit acting like it... By the way we beat TC too, but never lost to team like Gibson County on our own homecoming..

  38. I’d hate to see what y’all are bringing back. I must say I’ve been around HS football a long time and seen some great great teams, but the team this year was at the top of the list. Anytime a team can down and goes on to go 42-0 unanswered is pretty darn impressive!

  39. gonna have to agree with this one. TN usually has around 1-2 teams every yr that could compete nationally (Think of corn elder ensworth yrs, BA recently, Barry Brunetti MUS teams, past riverdale teams etc) but this yr it is bad. state game was absolutely pitiful. oakland would probably get smoked out of state. 6a team running a 1a offense

  40. i agree that there should be not be 9 classifications in TN but due to the publics constant complaining there will be bc of public private split

  42. So proud of my alma mater tonight. Set the tone early and never looked back. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine they would shutout Maryville and Whitehaven. Quite frankly could care less what people think of what Oakland runs on offense. The goal is to win a state championship, mission accomplished Goforthegoal, you might be on to something about nest RuCo team after tonight's game....
