  1. This game last year was the turning point for Fayetteville's season in my opinion. I attended this game last year. It was my 1st trip ever to Frog Bottom. City was up 14-0 and was driving with their first possession of the 2nd half. Had the ball 1st and goal. Then on 2nd and goal a City player was suplexed. So City responded. And after City players left the 'bench' area and the white hat stepped off the yardage it was 3rd and 62. Say what? Yes, it was 3rd and 62. False start next play made it 3rd & 67. Anyway, City held on for a 14-7 crazy hard fought victory and wrapped up the region championship. The next game City was minus 4-5 key players and lost to Gordonsville by 7. I brought all this up to state an opinion of mine that I've been wanting to make for a little while. This game last year was the turning point for Fayetteville. Yes, they lost composure and had several ejected. But they held on and pulled out the victory. Since that game they have played better assignment football, more disciplined and are better prepared. Anyway, good luck to both teams. I'd like to attend but I'm headed to GA Friday.

  2. Through 6 games Karns RB Desean Bishop has a total of 1819 yards. He is averaging 303 yards per game. With 4 regular season games remaining, he will need to average 303 per game. He might get a 5th game if the Beavers make the post season. I am cheering him on to get to this goal. He has been amazing to watch his first 3 years and I think you will start to see D1 offers pile in. He seems to never wear down and his motor is extremely high. I can't wait to see what the future holds for me.

  5. Until consolidation in 1969, there were two schools playing football ;E.W, Grove High and Central High, a countywide black school .. Five other schools (grades1-12) did not have football programs. Inman, a city middle school, had the only football in the count until the mid seventies when football was introduced in all these schools ( grades 1-8 ) Grove became a county wide 9th grade with a football program. A very successful youth program has a long standing and ongoing history. The county schools now play a consolidated program. GO BIG RED

  6. Fairview always has a good team but since this is a first time meeting, they probably don’t realize that WH usually always have a homefield “advantage.” I say WH by enough to win.

  7. Absolutely! I did not mean to take anything away from De'Sean. He is the real deal! But like you said about Mobley only playing the first half... it's apples and oranges. If Mobley played four quarters for fifteen games, 4k would've been totally possible. Powell was so good in those days. I had just moved to Knoxville a couple years earlier and was spoiled with the HS ball around here during that time!

  16. I want to apologize for getting bent out of shape on here last night. Lots of things going on personally and emotions running a little higher than normal this week. Springfield fans, I want yall to know I dont mean to come across so hateful and degrading towards your program in any way. I have to do better as a person and I will. We could definitely have our work cut out for us if yall bring your A game (which I fully expect) Henry County fans, I apologize to every single one of yall for being a douche bag. I want to encourage anybody else on here that comes at opposing teams like I did to try to watch what you say and let's all have the utmost respect for every single program we go up against whether we are favored by 50 or the underdog by 50. We are a very proud program and I will be the first to admit I can be arrogant at times. I hope both sides accept my apology and we can move forward.

  23. Here we go again. Everybody in Knox County plays in those margins. Period. If you believe otherwise you are delusional. And I have asked a dozen times what Powell is allegedly doing to get kids there that nobody else is. Specifics, please. Otherwise you are just like everybody else throwing out allegations without anything substantial to back them. And I repeat that I haven't talked to anybody connected to the Powell program in months, back to the early spring, so I am not in the mindset to "defend" anybody.

  24. Simpson marks first wrestling great enshrined in MTSU Hall SAM DAUGHTON goblueraiders.com Sep 30, 2021 Updated 12 hrs ago Comments Former MTSU wrestler Patrick Simpson will be the first inducted into the Blue Raider Hall of Fame in his sports on Saturday. MTSU ATHLETIC COMMUNICATIONS Gordon Connell had just been hired as the first ever head coach of the MTSU wrestling program, and he knew who his first call was going to be: Patrick Simpson. The high school senior was just coming off a heartbreaking loss in the Tennessee State Tournament, falling in the final of the 122 pound division by just one point. But his performance had caught the young coach's eye, impressed with Simpson's relentlessness and raw talent on the mat. "I figured that this guy has got a lot of fight," Connell said. "He didn't like to lose, he had that fighting spirit." Simpson took a visit to Murfreesboro shortly thereafter, and signed to become one of the first varsity wrestlers in Blue Raider history. Wrestling primarily at 126 pounds, Simpson quickly established himself as one of the team's top threats on the mat, and wrestled his way to become the first Blue Raider to compete in the NCAA Championships, when he won the NCAA Regional in 1979. He remains the only MT wrestler to ever win a regional title in program history. "Back in the beginning of the season, I beat a kid that placed fifth in the country the year before," Simpson said of his senior year campaign. "And that's when it kind of dawned on me that I better change my goals, and the goal should be to get to the NCAAs." The path for Simpson wasn't easy. As a young program, MT was often competing against the top schools in the southeast for the dual meets. Connell compared it to a modern FBS football team facing a SEC or Big Ten squad every other game. An injury the season prior, a hyperextended elbow earned in competition, forced Simpson to miss the previous season as well, so he'd be fighting from a lower seeded position. But he had some advantages too. Namely, assistant coach Mohammad Ghorbani, a world champion at 52 kg at the 1971 World Wrestling Championships from Iran, who moved to the U.S. shortly thereafter and ended up in Murfreesboro. After knocking on Connell's door one day and offering his help, Ghorbani and Simpson often sparred, given the two's similar size. "Pat began to learn moves from him that were not used anywhere in the country," Connell said. "He was doing things ten years ahead of the rest of the country, as far as technique goes." The off year meant Simpson entered the NCAA Regional at Notre Dame as the five seed in his weight class, meaning he needed to knock off three higher seeded opponents to claim the Regional title. "I wrestled the three best matches probably of my career," Simpson said. "The guy I beat in the finals of the region ended up being a two-time NCAA champion. At the time, he was just a freshman." Connell said two more MT wrestlers would go on to qualify for the NCAAs the next season, which would end up being the program's last as a varsity sport. Simpson, for his part, remembers the wrestling, but also the special memories he got to share his senior season with two of his brothers who joined him in the starting lineup for the Blue Raiders. Jim, just a freshman at the time, started at 134 pounds, while Frank, just a year behind Pat, started at 142 pounds. For Connell, he's grateful that the Hall of Fame honoring Simpson's career will help honor the wrestling program as a whole, a program that many Blue Raiders have forgotten about in the decades since it was dropped. "What Pat's induction is doing is it's at least saying that yes, Middle had a wrestling team, at one time," Connell said. "A lot of people have no recollection of it at all, but the fact that he's being inducted at least gives the program some representation." Simpson went on to become one of the best wrestling coaches in the state of Tennessee's history, coaching for over 45 years at his alma mater, Father Ryan High School, where he won 20 state championships and was named Coach of the Year by the Middle Tennessee Wrestling Coaches Association numerous times. That Father Ryan connection is something that especially touches Simpson about his induction, beyond just the personal honor itself, in that he'll be joining his former Father Ryan teacher, Boots Donnelly, in the Blue Raider Hall of Fame. "He was a student there, he came back and coached there," Simpson said. "I didn't play football because I was 100 pounds. But I love Coach Donnelly and to be able to go into the hall of fame that he's in, it's just an honor."

  30. Couldn't agree more, OSU. Those 5A defenses are an absolute train wreck. Coach Shadowens could rush for 1K in some of those regions. I think if he was at the 6A level in Region 2 or 3 (not Region 1-6A aka the ACC) specifically, he'd hit 1500. Depends on the non-region competition though as well, I suppose. If I were him or his parents, I would sit next year or try my damndest to enroll early. Maybe take an NIL deal with his 5Star fan boy, Jesse.

  33. It took Scott quite some time to turn West into a winner, but he ultimately did it. I would argue that he was sitting on a diamond mind which certainly helped. West has always had talent, but they underachieved for a number of years prior to his arrival, and even early in his tenure. Lamar Brown is no slouch though. Morristown West has been absolute trash since he left; prior to this season, Mo West won a total of 9 games after his departure. Brown has also been able to do what Jeff Harig couldn't after Scott's departure.

  36. Out of both schedules take out the outlier of Maryville and Alcoa and what do you have. I will give props to Knox West, I am high on them especially after the battle they gave Alcoa. But Powell, I've never been high on. Powell has beat a 2-4 4A Anderson County team, did not score majority of the points against Maryville until starters came out, and beat Halls by one score.

  38. The Hardin County tandem of Kaydin Pope (31 ypc) and Seth Garner (19 ypc) have combined for 1350 yards and 22 TD through 6 games with a sophomore QB. It's very tough to scheme them both. Pope has multiple SEC offers and Garner is committed to Memphis for baseball.

  41. You're a real tough guy talking ish about high school kids.........they laid down? You're pathetic. And there's nothing to dispute. I learned a long time ago that you can't argue with an idiot, which you clearly are. I tell ya what, go to today's practice and introduce yourself to the Forrest coaches. Let them know that you know way more about their team then they do. Do you not want them to succeed? I'm sure they'd love the help of the resident football guru. What ya scared of? Do it. Won't hurt to try. But of course you won't, because you're a typical cowardly internet troll/tough guy!!!!!! AKA a clown.

  42. Just got out of the Gainesboro jail after that lousy PA announcer didn’t like how I taunted him after the Indians came in and embarrassed those Jackson County losers. Since I have been gone, it looks like the boys have toughened up and started playing some Squatch Ball. I knew those cans of Skoal Mint I sent to the field house would help put some hair on their chest and give them the ability to lay some devastating downhill blocks. All I know is some Indians will be sinking some Viking Ships this week. I can’t wait to be back on the fence line Friday night and celebrating at Green’s Tavern.

  43. If no Maryville or Oakland or if DB was in the West they would have played in several championship games. Great post Swipes.

  44. Losing 35-28 to Maryville last year in the Quarter's wasn't competing? I like giving DB a hard time but there are a lot of schools that you would classify as not competing if your looking at State championships and having to go through Maryville or Oakland. The smaller schools you are talking about aren't your normal small schools either in Alcoa and Greeneville who DB has played the last few years. Both those teams could compete in 6a.

  46. Greeneville is very fast and to me is just a matter of their QB and receivers connecting enough to also open up some running Lanes with a very talented running back they have.If that happens and Greeneville is able to get off the field on the defense side,it could be ugly.Your correct on the other hand if coach Christian and all those good coaches that I've known for a long time can keep the Devil defense out there and maybe cause a few turnovers,it could be a very close and tossup game.Greeneville also has a second QB who is just as effective in the passing game if not more so.So yes the Devils have size and speed as well as being greatly coached and some depth.DB is a 6a school and depth should however be to their advantage tonight. We will all find out in a few hours if something unforseen doesn't happen.

  47. I haven't been able to watch much footage of the Greeneville HS Greene Devils this year. Are they as good as what I have read in the media? If so, what are are their strong suits? I know that Coach Christian always does a great job of creating a physical, down hill running attack that may stress Greeneville and force them to play some different structured coverages and add an extra run defender to the core. If this happens, I expect D-B to take advantage of them in the pass game. I have, however, been able to view some Science Hill footage over the past few weeks. I must agree that they stand no chance vs. the Maryville Rebels. Maryville is on a collision course with Murfreesboro Oakland in late November. Coach Hunt has some absolute gutsy ball players on both sides of the ball. Science Hill does a good job of getting the ball in athletes hands. Coach Carter is always creative in his play design and utilization of multiple personnel groupings. However, Maryville's stingy defense will swarm and match their athletic ability. Their safety #1 is the real deal.
