It’s not hearsay, just patently false. As one of those young coaches he apparently “ran off”, coach never once ridiculed or degraded anyone. Sure he challenged kids and coached them very hard, but we have different definitions of you call that degrading. Coach Hammontree changed my life when he gave me the chance to work for him. I learned more about being a man and caring for the people around me in 4 years working for him than I did in 20 years of my life. No one sacrificed more than he did. I left Heritage because I felt there would never be the support necessary to help the program succeed. I’m tired of hearing people drag others down especially those they truly don’t know. Coach has moved on and a new coach is there. Just let the man live and root for the team.3 points

One of my favorite stats to point out; The late Bill Horton never won another playoff game at Rhea Co. after Hammontree ended his 10 year run as his defensive coordinator.2 points

Track has always been big at OR. Ran off about 7 straight titles in the 60s. Your hate for Gaddis runs deep, huh? What did he ever do to you, to make you disdain him that much? You can’t seem to stop talking about the guy. He’s living rent free in your head. Might wanna get that checked out, you don’t wanna go to the grave with that on your heart. Cummings, is that you? I think I remember that the Rebels missed their second extra point making it 13-0 and thus having good reason to go for 2 when they scored again, making it 21-0. But, they continued to go for 2 for the next 4 scores before halftime. At that point, everyone knew a statement was being made.1 point

When Danny was a senior he was the quarterback on the 82 team and also the placeholder on extra points. At the end of the game Heritage scored a touchdown with very little time left and went ahead 9-0. On the following extra point Danny rose up and threw a perfect pass to one of his receivers which made it 11-0 and Heritage's first win against Maryville since the series started in 77. Maryville fans were highly ticked off because they felt like it was rubbing salt in the wound. The following year when both teams met again at Maryville the Rebels ran away with the game and after the first couple of touchdowns they went for two points after each score for a pay back and the score was 45-0 at halftime. The following Monday Bob Gilbert the sports eiditor for the local paper bashed Maryville in an article called the Humilation of Teenagers and tore into Maryville even though he was a graduate of the school. Those were the good ole days when Heritage had decent teams and the rivalry between them and Maryville was a fun event to see.1 point

Dylan's Dad, I'm glad you replied. I wanted to reply but wasnt willing to take the bait. There were 20 wrestlers on the team. I may be mistaken and correct me if I'm wrong but I believe 5 of the 20 attend McCallie right now and one will next year. At most, there are/were 6 kids on that team who attend McC. That leaves 14 other team members who have ZERO affiliation with McC (outside of maybe some friends) who represented our state to the best of their ability and wrestled their butts off that weekend. That weekend was a first for Tennessee and obviously a small step in the right direction for us as a state. Congratulations TEAM TN BLACK!1 point

As you know I've preached it before but the big schools can be relevant in the football playoffs but the entire system has to by in from the pee wee up. I can promise you if Caine Ballard was the head coach at DB he would win them a championship with the athletes they have including the ones walking the halls. It's a system and a strong head coach that knows what they are doing.1 point

Who's going to pay them? In my opinion coaches need to be in the school to interact with the kids/players. They need to be there to help encourage and intervene when it is necessary. Coaches need to have access to players attendance, grades, and discipline records. Coaches are a huge influence on players.1 point

Great Synopsis. I think Simpson won the Pan Ams. It appears he was balancing military duties while wrestling internationally. Bill Harlow was a 3x national champ / world team member placing 2nd in the 1970 world championships. Clearly Marabale and Harlow are our most decorated Tennessens on the international scene.1 point

Oh how quickly we forget (or maybe some never knew)… Nick Marable (CBHS) made the 2014 US Freestyle World Team at 70 kg and wrestled in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Nick was 2-1 at the event finishing in 8th after losing to multi-time world medalist Shabanov of Belarus. He holds the dubious honor of being the first wrestler to beat Jordan Burroughs in international competition. He won a couple of US Nationals, placed at senior Pan-Am’s, was on two World Cup teams, and placed at several international events. I think that is going to put him as most successful in the modern era at least. Nick Boykin (Riverdale) is having a good run and showing he can compete and be close to the top spot in the US at the senior level. I am pretty sure Nick has made at least one age group world team (Jr or U23) but I am not going to look it up and could be wrong. Beyond Marable and Nick Boykin, I think Phillip Simpson (MBA) got to wrestle in the Pan Am’s maybe… don’t quote me there but he was on the circuit a while during his Army stint and competitive at the senior level. Behind that it’s probably Tommy Brackett (CBHS) who has been in and around the senior level a while and made a U23 Greco team in 2021, got to wrestle and place at a couple of Pan AM age group events, and has made several international tours. He was a match or two out from qualifying for the Olympic trials this cycle. He has finished second in various age group world team trials a handful of times.1 point

This may be a dumb question but does anyone know if there’s ever been an Olympic qualifier in wrestling from TN?1 point

I’m not familiar with Metro. Maybe someone who is will chime in. I’ve seen them shuffled in small systems, so it shouldn’t be a problem at all in Metro, if they do want him in another building.1 point

Ah, more Coach Ham bashing. There seems to be a club, so tell us, are you the VP, Chairman? From the stories I've heard from his past players themselves Coach Ham is one of a kind and has literally worked himself to the bone year after year at every coaching stop. His legacy isn't Ws and Ls. So give it a rest. It may be old school cliché, but could you even walk a mile in his shoes? The man has retired from coaching, let him be. Even on these measily message boards.1 point

Yes. I have seen that cause problems. In my last coaching stop, if a coach resigned they got them into another building. Sometimes the very next day. Welcome.1 point

Agree. The man literally sacrificed time, moments, memories you can't get back with his own family for every single athlete at that school. (and many others) To those that continue to be negative about him and continue to bring him up; He's been loyal, hardworking and just his entire coaching career. Ask anyone that actually has a leg to stand on in regard to Coach.1 point

Egotistical? That's a new one. It's funny, I'm friends with two of the younger coaches that he "ran off" as you say. In fact, he helped them find jobs, encouraged them to do what was best for their growing families, provided advice, support and still does to this day.1 point

I lived through the Hammontree era with my sons. His 10 year tenure at Heritage was way too long. That is the most hard headed, egotistical man I have ever met. He ridiculed players and degraded repeatedly. He ran off some good young coaches that loved Heritage but couldn’t work for him. I do know what I’m talking about and it’s not hearsay, I lived it.1 point

QUICK UPDATE - First, I see a lot of wrestling names that I recognize on that GoFundMe. THANK YOU so much for helping this family. After the long surgery on Sunday morning to repair his neck, Jacob suffered a collapsed lung. Sometimes this happens after long surgeries. They had to put him on a ventilator to get his breathing back on track. He came off the vent on Monday morning and they put a BIPAP on him to help control his breathing. As of today, Thursday, the BIPAP came off and he is breathing well on his own. He is working towards drinking a glass of water and hopefully eating some solid food at some point in the near future. Jacob can "feel" when someone touches his legs, but there is still no movement. His parents are beginning to prepare for him to be moved to the Shepherd Center in the next few days. He will be there in Atlanta for 30-45 days. Im sure he will receive excellent treatment. Please continue to pray for healing for him and if you are so moved, please contribute to the gofundme link above to help in any way you can. The go fund me is doing well, but this is going to be a very long road for these guys Im afraid.. Thanks again! Sells1 point

It’s amazing how bad atwoods want satt out… that’s the only reason he ever ran for school board that’s been his goal this whole entire time to get the satts out. It’s amazing how the people come to trousdale and stay a year or two and see how 2-3 families try to dictate a small county.Funny part is everyone else’s little plan of getting veto in backfired last weekend.. it’s funny how taking the AD job away from a coach making 30k$ less and giving to someone making like 95$ a year tell me that isn’t trying to just screw a certain person over ..what a d… move and whoever approved it. lol. Trousdale county same ole crap…never will change letting the 3-4 names run the town.1 point

Wake up because that is HS football now. They will either ride the pine, find a new position, or transfer. Every school recruits. Some are better than others, some don't have to try as hard after awhile once they start winning more than the surrounding area schools.1 point

As a parent, this was always my worst nightmare. I take it for granted every time I get in the car and took it for granted most of the time when one of my sons was on the wrestling mat. Sometimes things are not "going to be fine". Jacob was wrestling in a Greco match at Iron Man when he was thrown. He landed on his head and neck and shattered his C6 and C7. His spinal cord was offset which is not good. He is currently at Vanderbilt Childrens in Nashville and has undergone a big surgery to brace his neck with pins and screws and realign his spinal cord, but damage has been done. He is currently not able to move his legs or control his fingers. I visited him yesterday and this young man has a long row to hoe. I'm asking the wrestling community here in TN to lift his family up in prayer and come together to help. He will likely have to go to Shephard Center in Atlanta which is going to require his mom and dad to take off work, travel, eat out, etc. Jacob does have some feeling in his lower extremities, so we are praying he will be able to recover. Time will tell and God is in control. If you are unable to donate $5-10, please offer up prayers for Jacob to heal completely and for patience and strength for his parents as they are no doubt dealing with a worst nightmare. GO FUND ME for JACOB gofund.me/22e00da8 Thanks, Matt Sells - Blackman Wrestling0 points
