  1. If a game official made this comment any time before Fayetteville was notified then there are a number of people who have a number of questions to answer. Not only that , if that is the case it is very hard to suggest that this is not a witch hunt by someone.

  2. I get your point also, but we're talking about an independent organization here. Membership is voluntary... you have to petition to join, pay a fee, and agree to abide by their by-laws (policy) in order to be recognized and compete against other member schools for a championship. Fayetteville is perfectly within their rights to have a football team consisting of ineligible (per TSSAA) kids if they choose, but TSSAA also has the right to disallow them from competing in their association while playing the ineligible player(s). This isn't a case of one school being singled out or unfairly punished, this is one school violating a long standing policy and receiving a standardized punishment for it, which they may appeal. If Fayetteville doesn't wish to follow TSSAA's policy, they are in no way forced to do so by law, but by the same logic, TSSAA isn't forced to recognize Fayetteville as a member, or to allow them to compete for a championship.

  3. He went through the traditional transfer process and was deemed eligible. Someone filed a complaint and the TSSAA investigated and cleared him again with a formal letter on 9/6. In week 10 TSSAA again (third time) revisited the issue and deemed him ineligible.

  5. There are lots of rumors and opinions out there...Everyone is entitled to their opinions. There are a ton of different school systems that require different bylaws to apply as fairly as possible. I could care less either way if Fayetteville specifically gets in or is booted out. From this point it looks like both sides were wrong to a certain degree. I hate it for the players, but unfortunately in high school sports in the day and age players are subject to adults making bad decisions or not following the rules. I don't know who is wrong here, but rules are set up to keep order...everyone must follow those rules. Teams/schools get in trouble yearly for breaking rules and Fayetteville is no exception. Doesn't matter the situation or record. They could be #1 team in the U.S., but if they broke a rule or didn't follow TSSAA bylaws they are subject to consequences. It happens! Get over it and move on and let the teams that followed the rules or knew the rules get their shot!

  6. Fayetteville is in the right. This all hinges on the definition of ‘territory’. Here is the TSSAA definition. *** Territory – For a public school, the “territory” of the school is the geographic boundaries and bus routes of the area served by that school as established by the local board of education. For a system-wide public school or a home school student participating at a public school, the “territory” of the school is the geographic boundaries of the school system. For a non-public school or a home school student participating at a non-public school, the “territory” of the school is the area within a twenty (20) mile radius from the school. *** Now, the ‘bus route’ specification is quite clearly meant to apply to ‘zoned’ school districts, with multiple high schools (NOT system-wide schools) in specific and enforced zones within a system. The territory for a zoned HS among multiple High schools in the system is within the bus routes of the particular zone and also within the geographic boundaries of the system that fall within that zone. The territory for a ‘system-wide’ HS is only the geographic boundaries - bus routes do not apply (they are intended to define the zones for multi-school systems). Fayetteville is clearly a system-wide school, since there is only one HS in the system. By the TSSAA’s rules, Fayetteville’s territory is defined exclusively by the geographic boundaries (all of Lincoln County acc’d to the school board, which the TSSAA recognizes has full authority in this matter). I don’t know if this was an attempt by the TSSAA to subvert the rules or simply an inability to correctly understand and apply them, but it’s quite clear that the previous ruling is incongruent with the published TSSAA rules and definitions.

  9. The TSSAA all clear letter was given to Fayetteville on 9/6. The same day a 5 week stretch of region games began. The comment on CoachT predicting how the season would end occurred a few hours after their 5th and final region game was won. Dubious timing!

  10. 20. Q. What is meant by the term “system-wide” public school in the definition of “territory” as defined in the Definitions? A. A system-wide public school is a school without geographic zones or bus routes that draws students throughout the school system. Examples of system-wide public schools are, but not limited to: Chattanooga School for the Arts & Sciences, Martin Luther King, the magnet portion of Liberty Technology High School, etc.

  12. They were correct early on and are incorrect now. There is no logical basis whatsoever to conclude that FHS is not a 'system-wide' school, given that it's the only High School in the system. As a system-wide public school, the territory of FHS is defined exclusively by the geographic boundaries. Bus routes are entirely irrelevant to system-wide public schools under the rules. They are relevant to zoned systems where specific schools serve specific areas within the zone only. **** Territory – For a public school, the “territory” of the school is the geographic boundaries and bus routes of the area served by that school as established by the local board of education. For a system-wide public school or a home school student participating at a public school, the “territory” of the school is the geographic boundaries of the school system. 14. There isn't time to go through the appeals process that TSSAA is in charge of and get in the playoffs. The more severe penalty is missing the playoffs and not the fine. What if FHS gets a ruling in their favor AFTER the playoffs begin? They get their $600 refunded and still missed the playoffs. IF TSSAA had ruled correctly in September then Fayetteville would have had time to go through the appeals process. Instead TSSAA revisited an old case and made a ruling 6 days before the final game of the season. As yet they have not revealed any new bombshell evidence that changed their decision. TSSAA immediately scrubbed FHS' wins and region standing. Time was of the essence and after a weekend of deliberation with legal counsel the school system decided this was their best recourse.

  17. I’m sure I’ll be there to watch my alma mater (White County) play CHS. I’ll say this much both Upperman and Cookeville are getting the kids involved at a young age. I’ve started over and have a 3rd grader (girl) going to Upperman and playing. They’ve been playing since September and the kids are starting at age 6 now!

  19. I think at the very least, a hard look into the appeals process. The TSSAA is judge, jury, executioner in this regard. It says something when Fayetteville thinks the best course of action is to lawyer up. Honestly think a little oversight into the entire way the TSSAA operates wouldn't be a bad thing. A renewed effort into explaining or simplifying eligibility rules would help. This is happening more and more, I don't think schools are trying to deceive the TSSAA but merely something has been miscommunicated in all the paperwork Their ranks are filled with mostly administration/principals, Id like to see more coaches or former coaches fill their ranks to address alot of the real issues HS Sports in the state face. The exclusion of players into all star games and the bloated nature of the way the football playoffs is done when the rest of the state is still 3 Classifications in the major sports. By no means am I an expert on the TSSAA, but these are just some of the things I'd like to see done

  22. You seem to know TSSAA history (I don't), and you've said you don't recall them ever losing a court case like this. Have they ever granted an appeal in a relatively high-profile case like this? I think the appeal would have been gone through except for the timing. If they get a 'no' Friday afternoon, there are no avenues left. I can't help but recall that there was a poster on here that said this was all going to happen as far back as Oct 5th - said an official told him. Seems like if the ruling had come down back then (or before), there would have been plenty of time to go through the appeal. Might not have even needed any appeals if the ruling had happened before 2-3 region games.

  23. So if I’m understanding what the bold section is basically saying, if a current enrolled student athlete participants in a unsanctioned TSSAA sport their eligibility is gone for a period of time determined by the board of control! Again, I’m questioning what rules the TSSAA decides to enforce and which they don’t! This Fayetteville situation will effect the playoff chances of another team but they choose to ignore a proven violation which cost one team a State Championship. Just something to ponder over..

  25. We had a pretty good atmosphere going in 2014 too. But in all seriousness, we’re just looking to avoid injuries for both teams. We already have home playoff games. Regardless of friday’s outcome, there’s a decent chance we’ll meet again in the quarters. Good luck to the Pirates. If any of my coffee loving pirate friends are reading this, I’ll have a pot waiting on you when you when you reach the Basin. You know who you are. And Cap, there’s not a one of us up here harboring any ill will toward the Pirates. I think that beat down talk is a tad unnecessary, but if it helps you sleep at night... by all means, go for it.

  26. but if it was really their territory, they would run buses there. this situation is why the bus route rule is there. a system could just say "our territory is the entire united states if you can provide your own transportation, but we will run buses in the city limits."

  27. I am going to try and clarify the story since everyone keeps talking about something from two years ago, and there seems to be different stories going around. Hopefully this will be the end of this, and will get this post back on track talking about pound for pound rankings for the upcoming season. The plan in the preseason was for Noah to start the year at 120, and Brayden at 126. Once they got the 2 pound allowance, Noah would go to 113, and Brayden would drop to 120. Noah did grow, and it was clear he wasn’t going to make 113. He was trying to get down to 113 still, and got pretty dehydrated. This was when he lost the match to Borders (They had a rematch a month later and Noah pinned him). It was clear Noah wasn’t himself, and I think he went to the hospital after the dual. It was 100% the right decision at that point to not let him try and make 113 anymore. Brayden still wanted 120, and now Noah wasn’t going to 113. Coach Roberts held a wrestle off after Christmas. The only people there were Brayden, Noah, Coach Roberts, and the TSSAA ref. I would have paid to watch the match, but I understood the reasoning to make it private. Brayden ended up winning a decision. I don’t remember the final score, but was told it was a good match. Noah went up to 126, and won state again anyway in a stacked weight class. I don’t think anyone wanted a wrestle off, but that’s what happened. At least it worked out, and they both won state titles that year. For the rankings, I think some of the younger wrestlers are being overrated. A placement at Fargo as a cadet or NHSCAs in the freshman division is impressive. However, I don’t think that automatically makes someone top 10 in the state over a Junior or Senior that hasn’t had the same success on a national level. I’m taking Noah, Whitworth, Bowers, Isbell, Bates, Coffey, McDaniel, and other wrestlers that have proven themselves in state (in HS) over someone like Howard or Davis that has never won a TSSAA state title but was successful on the national level against wrestlers their own age. Some of these young guys may go on to be among the best TN has ever seen, but I wouldn’t say they are the best pound for pound yet. If you look at Flo’s pound for pound list, there is not 1 Freshman or Sophomore on that list right now. There’s a reason someone like McGowan that just won a cadet world title, and is number 1 on the freshman big board isn’t on Flo’s pound for pound list yet.

  31. Enjoyed the semifinal trip to Sequatchie a few years ago. The crowd was really into the game and the atmosphere was great! Seq being the home team helps them a little bit but The Bees getting their coach was a huge step for Upperman. I look for Upperman to build a solid program over the next few years and probably be the annual favorite in their region as long as the HC is there. Not seen enough of Sequatchie the last two years to make a sound prediction, but my thoughts are Bees have advantage in Coaching and QB play while Sequatchie has home field and possible intangible of Bees looking past them.

  32. You are correct 100%, but how long does this process take? Would the director that made the ruling in September be able to attend to make statements on why he ruled the way he did then? I by no means think you should skip the appeals process altogether, but time is against you this late in the season. I, like many of the posters on here, would like to see what made the TSSAA rule the way they did this past week. Transparency, to me, is key in this whole situation.

  33. Boiled down to the simplest of terms, here the crux of the matter. This relates to the definition of ‘territory’ If FHS is a ‘system-wide’ school, FHS is 100% correct and the TSSAA is 100% wrong. If FHS is a single school in a multi-school system with rigid zoning that is defined by bus routes, the TSSAA is correct. FHS is the only HS in the system. It is an absurd notion that it isn’t a ‘system-wide’ school. Incidentally, there is a similar argument for Huntland. There are two HS in the system, but there is open zoning, so HHS is a system-wide school. That’s why Winchester kids can play there, no problem, even though the bus doesn’t run by their house. There are probably four dozen other examples around the state.

  36. I get your point but when it comes to appeals there should be a 3rd party to over see the appeals. Allowing an association to be the judge, jury and executioner is a bit one sided. If you appeal a court decision it goes to a higher court and not back to the same court that handed down the sentence.
