  1. Great team and great program, Greeneville. You all surely deserved this championship. For us, it's a shame our best team in a long time happened at the same time that Greeneville was on another level from any other 4A team. Your team and program have my great respect. I am excited to see what young Mr. Ballard can accomplish at West Point.

  2. Coaches are well aware of the fact that, no matter how much you win, people will always gripe about whatever you're doing, especially if you're doing something that's "unfashionable." There are legendary coaches in other states who win state titles regularly who have been run off for running veer, Wing-T, single wing, or even the I formation. Meanwhile, a lot of fans just want to see the ball in the air. If a coach runs the Wing-T and goes 3-7 for a couple of years in a row, that coach will likely be fired. If he finishes 3-7 throwing the ball around, they'll probably keep him around for a while. Two of the most dominant HS programs in the nation , De La Salle in CA and Bellevue in Washington, are old fashioned Split Back Veer and Wing-T offenses, respectively, and they roll over everybody like they're made out of tissue paper... but that doesn't stop people in the peanut gallery from griping that they're not running a more "modern" offense and demanding changes. Same goes for other top national HS programs like Smith Center in Kansas (who ran a unique wishbone until a few years ago), Apopka in FL (single wing and is the Maryville of Florida, basically), and JT Curtis in LA (who are also veer). Don Markham, the inventor of the Double Wing offense, was one of the most successful HS coaches of all time, with a ton of amazing turnarounds and national records at multiple schools in multiple states--I mean the guy made a career out of taking over perennial doormats who were 1-9 or 0-10 and going undefeated with a gold ball and state or national scoring records in his first year on the job... but he never stayed at any HS for longer than 3-4 years because of all the griping about how the offense wasn't good enough. You see this on the college level, too. Years ago, Nebraska got tired of winning only 10-11 games a year running that "outdated" option offense, so they fired their coach and brought in a succession of pro-style and spread coaches to throw the ball to mediocrity. A lot of HS coaches have realized that they can still get away with running an old fashioned offense if they can figure out a way to make it work from the shotgun so it looks "modern." Go under center, and the Wing-T, I formation, or triple option is outdated. Back the QB up 4 yards with a bubble screen every now and then and all of a sudden you're a genius. It really is that simple... if they can make it work. Heck, I've talked to coaches in other states who run the Single Wing and get away with it by calling it "Power Shotgun." Give me success over style points, any day. No matter how you score, a TD is still only worth 6 points. Honestly, I think a lot of the truly terrible teams out there trying to run spread offenses would be a lot better off going under center and grinding it out so they at least kill some clock, stop turning the ball over, and don't get humiliated 50-7 every week. Also, with everyone trying to run "the spread" now, being that one team on the schedule who does something different and punches you in the mouth on every play can be a huge advantage.

  3. Wow what a great game. First off I want to say congratulations to Haywood County on their great season. Man that was some BIG Boy's there is definitely kid's on that team that will be playing on Saturdays. #91 was as advertised very good football player. #2 was a great runner extremely fast and deceptively strong . Very impressed with Haywood County. After watching all 15 game's that greeneville played this year. I do believe Haywood was the best team we played all year. And as far as my GREENE DEVIL'S go wow what I can I say we got punched right in the mouth at the beginning of the game and never even flinched. Such poise and determination. And this team's will to win is something else. I thought the o line played a great ball game. And the backs ran hard. And of course Cade did his thing. Really going to miss watching these senior's play what a special Group. It really makes this old Devil feel good to see the team playing together and playing for each other the way they do. What a wonderful season. So proud of each and every one of you guys. Now to the under classman. Take off the rest of the weekend and then it's weight room Monday LoL. Got to get ready for a shot at that 3 peat. But once again much respect to Haywood County they deserve or respect they have a great football team

  5. Great analysis, If Cville stops Whitwell they win, if Whitwell stops Cville they win. I bet you got a shot to be on College Game Day when Corso finally retires.

  8. Reading some of this stuff about Oakland having a terrible wingT offense and not being near as good as teams from other States is comical. Of course Whitehaven was criticized 2 years ago and Maryville has taken lots of criticism. Who cares about other States? Oakland is your 6A Champions. I respect Oakland a lot. Even though they are now a rival to Maryville. I think Oakland is a classy program. When Oakland and Maryville play each other there is respect shown. I don't care what offense Oakland runs. I have seen them run wingT but also spread you out. Their offense is good enough. Oakland wins with defense. What they did to Maryville and Whitehaven is very impressive. Congratulations to Oakland on a state title.

  9. Well considering D2 doesn't play the week before, they should ALWAYS be the Thursday games.

  11. Oakland fan here.............I watched them play before us last night and they are more than IN the conversation! Great team! As an outsider, I saw what our Oakland team this season has in Greenville's players. They seem to truly care for the guys beside them. Most definitely our biggest asset! Congrats on the gold ball!!

  12. Someone may have mentioned this already (I haven't had time to read all the pages after the game), but this game was won in two phases. Strength & conditioning and coaching! Haywood just wore out in the second half. I give credit to the weight room and offseason conditioning programs Greeneville has. Secondly, Greeneville adjusted well. #92 was a beast at fullback!!!! But everything went behind him. If they countered, he came across the line. If the ran a sweep, he went to the outside. If the ran a dive, he was busting up the middle. I get it! Many of a coach will line up and say, here's what I'm running, it's your job to stop it. But if I can figure it out from the stands, Greeneville's coaches will definitely figure it out. Heck, the first time Haywood was forced to punt, #92 was resting n the bench that series. He was a monster! All in all congrats to the Greene Devils! Four in nine years is pretty amazing feat. Also congrats to Haywood on a great season. You gave Greeneville their toughest challenge, especially for a half. (Yes, even more than AC, haha, I couldn't resist. I just hate the season is over.

  15. You sir, are clueless! Regardless of what offense was being run by Oakland, it mattered not. That defense was incredible. If you have no insight and could not recognize how good that team was, dont keep embarrassing yourself with stupid posts..

  16. Congrats to Oakland - totally dominant. “Boring” offense compliments an incredible defense. That offense completely controlled the ball and wore the WH defense down. It may not be sexy, but it’s extremely effective. I loved WH band. Maybe shouldn’t have played during play, but the drum line was awesome and horn section rocked. Dancers looked great too.

  17. Oakland ran primarily out of the I, but threw in some shotgun/wildcat. They had 3 guys that could be a feature back that year

  18. This is perhaps the best representation of what this program is all about. Thanks to Tim Hayes of the Bristol Herald Courier https://www.heraldcourier.com/sports/net-juggernaut-greeneville-achieving-historic-success/article_2a89e96e-f375-11e8-bb82-c7a4c50374ad.html

  21. You cant call it a pickum team when they come all on their own.We dont recruit and honestly how could a 1A team?We dont have anything to offer.lol.Grace was recruiting and actively going after kids and letting them live with coaches and other families.I had a huge problem with that.TSSAA was sent a letter from a lawyer in Kingston after the Midway game.Mr Childress and his folks checked EVERY kid on our team and then sent us a copy of the letter he sent back to said lawyer clearing EVERY kid.If a kid goes to aby school and does it legally NO ONE has anything to say.

  22. That's the HC. Only thing I disagree with his calling is having the QB run back and forth EVERY play. QB has the arm band, USE it. Only thing WH had last night I did not like was the stupid Purge banner. Could have set the refs against y'all if they took it the wrong way. Somebody needs to tell the cheer leader coach to THINK before she commits the team.

  23. Beating small schools with a pick up team is nothing to crow about. You are looking like Grace and you guys hated them for this same stuff.Pot meet kettle,

  24. Great defense, great ground game (veer, wing t, iform, single wing ect.), enough passing to keep teams honest outside , great weight room, great character guys, great parents, great administration, community buy in = Championship or close to it each year.... IE: Oakland STICK THAT IN YOUR SPREAD! MOJO

  25. To my Whitehaven fans, alumn, and whatnot: Last night was a nightmare! I sat in the stands watching the game unfold and I thought to myself .... "Now I gotta go back and face eers!" I know BHS has more to say but he is restraining himself. Our Offense looked totally inept. We didn't generate a first down until mop-up time. My hat is off to the defense, because when the O continually goes three and out and you have to fend off that bunch with goal-line stance after goal-line stance. It gets TIRING. You did very well to only allow 37 points! How may times did we hold at the goal line? I forget. To the WH O. That was embarrasing! I'm being kind. The athletes are in place. It is NOT the jimmy and Joes fault. I know about the fumble, but that didn't get our tails whipped. No offensive production at all. I know the Oakland defense is good. I give them the credit they are due. But ... no first downs with all of that talent? I know we lost #14 ... that is no excuse either. That was the eptiome of under performance. That was horrible. That was just plain ole' pathetic. Well, at least my wife got an opportunity to see her folks.

  29. Whitehaven, please tell number 2 and 4 Thank You for letting me see some great plays. Those two young men played their tails off and stopped a couple more sure scores. Like I also said earlier in the week, there was NO give up from your team and they played the full 48. While they may have not been up to your usual standards, the players gave what they had and should be congratulated for making it to the Championship game. Oakland, Congratulations. You pointed out a football trueism last night. While offense puts butts in the seats, DEFENSE wins Championships. Now as to earlier Rutherford County teams, I not only saw the 70 Central team, I played against some of them! Have also seen all the other Rutherford County state championship teams. There has been one or two better teams from here that won the Gold Ball also. I agree I would love to see the current Oakland team go against a couple of the R'dale teams of old.

  30. I know Cookeville has been a great host these last 10 years, but I honestly wish TSSAA would go back to 5 classifications and move back to Floyd Stadium. In my opinion, attendance would improve because I know some feel that the playoff system now is watered down with too many classes. With greater competition comes greater fan interest. It wouldn't be a bad idea for the privates to go to 2 classifications and possibly playing at Vandy. Both locations would be great access for all teams across the state for travel purposes.

  31. Good game. Two strong teams. Congrats to both. Cookeville is the most sterile place to have a football game on the planet. Chernobyl or North Korea would be a warmer more exciting environment. Fans are 3 light years from the action. Crowd noise is non existent. It's like a football experiment lab. Think back to the last 2-3 rounds. Packed stands, people screaming, waving cowbells, milk jugs full of rocks etc, then compare it to that operating room known as TTech's football field. Night and day. Awful.

  32. TC is the best team Peabody played except for Milan. Both teams defense were awesome. Injurings part of game, you are not going to make it to championship game without players having injuring .As for 2a not being as good as 1a, could've been true for years.I remember when Union City was in 1a they dominated, when they got to 2a they did the same.i really believed the two best teams played in championship game.I think either team could of won.It just happen Peabody won when it counted the most.I really think both teams showed the other teams weakness. From a fan I really enjoyed watching these young men from both teams represent their towns well. CONGRATULATIONS to all young men on both teams for the great football they played this year!

  36. ST, everybody knows that you are the MAN on the T! You support your pirates but at the same time you call out good teams as you see them! The real “T” posters know who you are, but the “fake T” posters who only show up 1 time don’t understand how much of an asset you are to this website! You are the man and we (from watertown) appreciate what you provide to the 1A and 2A threads. Keep doing what you do.

  39. Fireworks was shot in Dunlap not Whitwell. They had to come through Dunlap and Sequatchie county going to Cookeville. Just Valley Pride is all. I think almost all schools shoot them when they score anymore but not many does it for the other teams as they roll through there town.

  44. Who knows. I didn’t expect him to leave because of his family, but he will choose football. I expect him to go somewhere bigger where he has some filter schools to bring in more kids. I don’t really see him choosing Westview, but who knows. Brighton is available, his old school. I’d expect him to go to a 4A 5A school with the hope of having more athletes than little ole Waverly. Here is the truth about Waverly. The only ppl that care about sports in Waverly are the players, their families, and sport alumni. The administration doesn’t care. The school board doesn’t care. Everybody was excited about the program. They did well under McConnell. Granted probably the 3 most athletic football players in school history played the last 4 years. That’s over. McConnell will leave. And Waverly will go back to being mediocre. Unless! They bring in Randal Boldin from Whitwell who is playing in the State Championship tomorrow in his second year as a head coach. Boldin is a former Waverly Tiger and I think he would be the best fit. He will be a great coach who actually cares about the program and has deep roots here. He won’t be trying to leave... ever. Any other coach that comes in will be here as a stepping stone for their career, just like McConnell

  45. Haha, shoot Blazer cmon man. I hope a lot of people from other schools and areas come support us. I’m sure some Alcoa fans will probably stay over from their game and watch us, and I know there’s gonna be a few Greene Devil fans there. I just hope we can finally get over the hump and do this thing, I believe we will.
